Starting the season on fire never ends well.... who has won it or been promoted when they were top after 10 games? Not many... Doing a Bolton last season or a stags in 2012/13 will do.

Slow start good finish.

Position after 10 games - last five years

20/21 - Cheltenham 3rd, Cambridge 2nd, Bolton 19th, Morecambe 10th
19/20 - Crewe 2nd, Swindon 4th, Plymouth 14th, Northampton 12th
18/19 - Lincoln 1st, Bury 8th, MK Dons 13th, Tranmere 16th
17/18 - Accrington 3rd, Luton 5th, Wycombe 8th, Coventry 4th
16/17 - Portsmouth 4th, Plymouth 1st, Doncaster 3rd, Blackpool 13th

Average position of champions after 10 games : 3rd
Average position of automatically promoted after 10 games : 6th
Average position of play-off winners after 10 games : 11th
Average position of all promoted teams after 10 games : 7th

Last 10 years

20/21 - Cheltenham 3rd, Cambridge 2nd, Bolton 19th, Morecambe 10th
19/20 - Crewe 2nd, Swindon 4th, Plymouth 14th, Northampton 12th
18/19 - Lincoln 1st, Bury 8th, MK Dons 13th, Tranmere 16th
17/18 - Accrington 3rd, Luton 5th, Wycombe 8th, Coventry 4th
16/17 - Portsmouth 4th, Plymouth 1st, Doncaster 3rd, Blackpool 13th
15/16 - Northampton 10th, Oxford 6th, Bristol Rovers 14th, AFC Wimbledon 16th
14/15 - Burton 1st, Shrewsbury 7th, Bury 3rd, Southend 4th
13/14 - Chesterfield 1st, Scunthorpe 7th, Rochdale 8th, Fleetwood 2nd
12/13 - Gillingham 1st, Rotherham 11th, Port Vale 2nd, Bradford 7th
11/12 - Swindon 10th, Shrewsbury 2nd, Crawley 4th, Crewe 16th

Average position of champions after 10 games : 4th
Average position of automatically promoted after 10 games : 6th
Average position of play-off winners after 10 games : 10th
Average position of all promoted teams after 10 games : 7th

So, the team top of the league has only occupied 5 of 40 promotions spots in the last ten years (12.5%)

Final league position of teams top after 10 games

20/21 - Newport 5th
19/20 - Exeter 4th
18/19 - Lincoln 1st
17/18 - Notts County 5th
16/17 - Plymouth 2nd
15/16 - Wycombe 13th
14/15 - Burton 1st
13/14 - Chesterfield 1st
12/13 - Gillingham 1st
11/12 - Morecambe 15th

Average finishing position - 5th
Percentage that became champions - 40%
Percentage that were automatically promoted - 50%
Percentage that finished in the top 7 - 80%

Brilliant that, thank you

Excellent stats here. Bolton from last season will be a stand out. I think we overtook them in the table in early January, briefly. That said they had a massive overhaul in the Jan window and the gamble paid off for them.

Watched the first half on my lunch break,

Don't think we were that bad first half, pretty even game, we looked like scoring more then they did.

a few things I have noticed,

Clough is right in what he said about Oates, he is so positive on the ball, always looking to make something happen, he was the same in the first half at Matlock. You can tell he is confident.

Shelvey did not give the ball away once, even from goal kicks, his distribution is excellent, kept spraying the ball out to Gordon Or SM, inch perfect.

My concern is this:
Our attacking players do not have seem to have clicked at all so far and Lapslie doesn't look as sharp as some others, I dont think Hawkins and Johnson will be our starting 2 after watching the games so far, our players seem to be doing what they always do when there is a target man up there and rush things and take the easy option and kick it long.

Still early in pre season so obviously time to get it right.

The positives within that report seem to outweigh what can be coached from them. The front pairing have time to click and if not there are choices which is nice after last season!

I would also say that all the goals we have conceded involved players who in all likelihood won’t be starting too many league games this season.

Suppose it stems from there being more faith in the manager from the fanbase generally.

Coughlan and Dempster especially were both unproven managers. Nobody knew what to expect from them really so everybody was looking at those early games to inspire a bit of hope considering there was more scepticism around there appointments (I know Coughlan had had some games season previous but it was largely uninspiring). There were better signs last year under Clough and he has a lot of experience so suppose people are happy for him to crack on

Different players, different manager (and clearly a much, much better manager). We’ve got absolutely no reason to not trust Clough considering his track record along with the great job he did with us last season. Having a couple pre season games deter from the confidence we should have in him and the team is obviously ridiculous.

Worrying about what you see this early in a pre season is daft. It's all about building that fitness and match fitness up, also patterns of play.

The Coventry and Forest u23 games will be there or there abouts where we are at.

With half the team isolating then it's possible we won't look great in those games either.

6 very tough games coming up in August, that should get the fitness up to scratch but leaves little time on the training pitch to put thing right between games, if needed.
Would 3 draws 1 loss and 1 win be that bad, only gives us 6 points out of 15 but they are very tough league games.

Put bluntly, yes it would be bad. Dempster managed 6 points from his first six (I have used six games that you said originally, even though you have only predicted results for five)

6 points after 6 games last ten seasons (best case scenario) :

20/21 - 16th
19/20 - 19th
18/19 - 18th
17/18 - 18th
16/17 - 16th
15/16 - 18th
14/15 - 18th
13/14 - 18th
12/13 - 18th
11/12 - 18th

Only 3 of 40 teams promoted in those ten seasons had 6 points or less after 6 games (20/21 - Bolton, 11/12, Swindon and Crewe)

Out of interest. Assuming someone is bored enough . What's our forest 6 games points totals for previous seasons?

I know it's not about how you start but where you finish but it could be interesting.

That start by Coughlan. I knew it was bad but I think I've numbed myself to how bad it was. Didn't thi k it was just 2 points. That's got to be up there with the worst start to a league 2 season ever!

Thanks musings.

We have 6 games in August but 1 of them is the cuppy cup game against Preston, September is a bit easier with 4 games and no mid week fixtures so we can tweek things on the training ground, if needed.
Still think 6 points in August with only 1 loss wouldn't be that bad because of the opposition.

We drew three of the first six league games last season

Can someone put the final place against each season as well.

Just a short break then and a change of scenery, Bristol rovers will be tough on paper favourites for promotion, Preston will be lets have ago, and all games will be tough,
Judging which games we will win is a lottery, most teams will come to frustrate us, remember top 7 is the aim, any thing above will be a bonus
