Be interesting to see how they cope with t'codpeices. A step below and will be strong. Appaently they were washed out on Friday so let's see if they have a bit more fuel in their tanks for this one... oh and a bit more idea on how to pass and keep a ball, something sadly lacking at Matlock.

When we kept losing the ball I said to the bloke at the side of me that they must be knackered. Basics go out the window when you're too tired to play.

Clough eluded to it in his interview. They had been worked hard leading up to the game and I think he wanted us to play tired.

Sedgewick is completely right, when players are physically and mentally tired, the basics become difficult.

Mental skills can be trained just like physical skills can. It’s good to see some effort being made to improve our ability when playing tired.

I don’t know the answer to this but wouldn’t playing tired make it easier for you to get injured?

Why do we and others do the behind closed doors games? Is it for trialists to play without names being released.
The RH academy isn't really closed doors.

It’s because they weren’t expecting the pitch to be ready, I assume.

Yes. Both in a sense of being too tired and mistiming a kick/challenge and just plain overloading the muscles and pulling/tearing something.

I'd wager that had we had a full strength squad then they wouldn't have played tired.

That’s why we have sports scientists.

We’ll play tired in the season for definite, nothing wrong with pushing our limits now to prepare for then.

We just need to monitor and be sensible.

Behind closed doors are essential to clubs as they get to assess fitness, formations and a players ability without the scrutiny of the supporters and press. Mansfield have loads of these throughout the season as do all other clubs. These games are for the Manager to gather knowledge and information, not ourselves, after all they have out best intentions at heart?

Officiated in quite a few many years ago and was the referee at Lee Williamson’s trial game, against Forest before he left us. Was also at the behind closed doors game where Sheff Utd were trying to offload Ade Akinbiyi to Forest. When Ade missed a sitter the Sheff Utd coach turned to me as I burst out laughing, most unprofessional of myself that day and said ‘he is absolutely raspberry raspberry’. Needless to say Forest did not sign him.

So you may miss a game, but some friendlies we aren’t meant to see. Thankfully.

Interesting.
Wonder if Jimmy might go to Grimsby, can't see him on the bench at the moment.
