I’m quite a believer in fate and if we haven’t landed him it’s for a reason. Perhaps he will pick up a serious injury early doors. And before anyone takes umbridge, I’m not wishing the man any ill will and hope it doesn’t happen.

It does maybe show the level of high esteem he holds our club in though.

I struggle to believe that Clough seriously thought he would be able to sign Naylor. Let’s face it, he’s not a L2 player so it would have been a really good signing. But to get reportedly so close is disappointing.

With him being an unrealistic target in my eyes, I’m hopeful Clough will have a suitable list of alternative targets.

If he got to that stage and then changed his mind, given he lives in Sutton I can only assume this is about money and a significant amount.

We move on.... enjoy your drive to Wigan and back everyday Tom

Absolutely gutted we’ve missed out on Naylor, would have been a class above at this level.

I didn't think that Wigan were a club that splash the cash these days even though they are owned by a wealthy Arab in Bahrain.

Interesting that one of their non-executive directors is Head of Strategic Business Development at Sports Interactive who make the computer game Football Manager. He'll be able to get his hands on loads of useful data.

I think they’re having a go. Also signed Jack Whatmough from Pompey. Both he and Naylor will have worked with Richardson when he was Cooks assistant at Pompey. Probably had an insight into the wages they were currently on too.

Reading everything yesterday, Naylor was being chased by several clubs as he is a free agent. If the sages on Twitter are to be believed, Wigan were always the leading club in the chase and it appears that he considered us and turned down our offer.
He has stayed in League One with a club which is rebuilding so all quite uneventful.

An Oldham fan messaged me yesterday having seen that we were due to announce a striker saying that it could be Conor McAleny. I said that we knew it wasn’t him as we had seen the picture, and asked him why he thought that. He mentioned that we had been linked with them in their local press. I asked for a link but he couldn’t find one. I’ve tried searching and also couldn’t find anything.

Not sure if he’s just made a mistake but thought it might be worth mentioning.

Hope there is something in that, I rate him very highly.

Naylor would have been a big statement signing and a player who could have stayed many seasons if we reached League 1. You can't blame him for joining Wigan, they have been a Championship club recently so it gives him a high ceiling that if he was to join us.

I'm not sure where he would fit in the squad seen as he's been playing midfield where we are strongest, but if Nigel wanted him then I trust his process. If Naylor and Johnson are the sort of players we're going for then I think we're going about things the right way, not the flashiest of names but very good pedigree and attitudes.

I did note that Wigan had signed two players and they were both from the South - Jack Whatmough (Portsmouth) and Gwion Edwards (Ipswich Town). Leam Richardson has the Portsmouth connection.

Naylor would have been fantastic but on the highest wages at the club. One injury and that’s wasted money. I’d rather we focus on a bloody good keeper, defender and another good striker!!!

It also looks like Tom Naylor went to Wigan because his agent probably got a bigger fee from them. His agent also told David Sharpe that he did not want him to go to Mansfield. Is his agent Jake Speight?
