Wingers

Postby StagR » Sun Jan 07, 2024 4:19 pm

One for other old timers. With some discussion around Clough possibly bringing in a winger, that set me thinking about some of the great wingers we have had over the years. Off the top of my head and not necessarily in chronological order -
LEFT WING - Mike Stringfellow, Albert Scanlon, Tommy Knox, Wayne Corden.
RIGHT WING - John Gregson, Stuart Brace, Malcolm Partridge, Liam Lawrence.
Doubtless omitted some outstanding players. A shame that with the game evolving as it has, the old fashioned, out & out winger flying past his man is rarely seen these days. It’s all about attacking wing backs.

Absolutely wonderful winger, by far the best in my lifetime, not even close! I'd imagine he'd be in everyone of a certain vintages best ever Stags team.

And I know its about opinions but Malcolm Partridge.....!?!?!?!?!?! The only player to be so rubbish one season then play out of his skin at the start of the next for about three months and immediately get a career changing transfer xxxx

Ian Hathaway. One particular memory is him beating Nicky Platnauer against Notts County about four times to the point the poor fella could barely stand up before putting the ball on Steve Wilkinson’s head to score. Shame we lost 3-1.

Kevin Kent was great.

Gary Castledine - not in the same class as some of the others mentioned but I loved watching him play. Tricky, frustrating and occasionally brilliant, Blackpool away.

Gary Ford - probably underrated and a great crosser of the ball, especially dinking those corners on to Greg Fee’s noggin at the near post.

Corden - still the best out and out winger in my time and will take some beating.

Corden and Lawrence when I was growing up.

Louis Briscoe for the impact in getting us out the Conference.

Lawrence and Corden were the wingers when I first started going regularly. I didn’t know at the time that I wouldn’t see the like again!

Cordino was a joy to watch & a real quality winger however, there is only one Jimmy Mcaffery, remember hunting him down on Donny market on his family shoe stall & asking him to sign a photo
what a wizard this guy was

With the North stand in full voice , when Jimmy got the ball on the wing running towards us it was electric . Fantastic atmosphere

In my time watching Stags, Kevin Kent stands out. Gary Ford was very good too. Have to say though that Wayne Corden was simply fantastic. I don’t ever remember him ever scoring a tap in. Always brilliant goals. What a team that was. Cords on the left, Liam Lawrence on the right. Great memories of some incredible games.

Briscoe for me, as someone who has only been a stags regular for 20 years.

Good shout. Certainly the best in recent years.

Another from the past, Stuart Brace.
