Cambridge have released a lot of their better players, presumably through the players choice rather than theirs.

Michael Jacobs, Clark Robertson, Ryan Tunnicliffe and Kieron Freeman released by Pompey, all of whom I think we have been linked with in the past.

Don’t be surprised to see Hawkins back here … I still believe if we’d have kept him we’d be playing L1 football next year ..

We would definitely have made the play offs if we had kept Oli Hawkins or George Lapslie or one of them. Oli Hawkins would have given us a Plan B in attack which paid off at Hartlepool; and George Lapslie could have provided some much needed energy particularly as Davis Keillor Dunn's form dropped off in recent games and Rhys Oates was running on empty. Those two could have made the difference in the Sutton, Rochdale, Leyton Orient and Harrogate home games.

I'm agreeing with Billy! I'm off for a lie down.

Cambridge United
Under Contract: Will Mannion, James Holden, Liam Bennett, Jubril Okedina, Zeno Ibsen Rossi, Michael Morrison, Mamadou Jobe, Brandon Haunstrup, Adam May, Lewis Simper, Jack Lankester James Brophy, Saikou Janneh
Offered New Contract: Ryan Bennett, Harrison Dunk, Paul Digby, George Thomas, Fejiri Okenabirhie

Released: Greg Taylor, Liam O’Neil, Dimitar Mitov, Harvey Knibbs, Joe Ironside, Sam Smith, Shilow Tracey, George Williams, Lloyd Jones, Ben Worman

Former Stag Greg Taylor (33) leaves Cambridge after 10 years of service and a testimonial. He can play as a left sided centre half. He has made 298(15) league starts for Cambridge and scored 7 goals. He made 8 league starts on loan for the Stags from Luton at the end of the season when we won the National League.

Nigel Clough was a fan of target man Joe Ironside two seasons ago during lockdown. He has played 93(32) league games for Cambridge and scored 34 goals.

Exeter City
Under Contract: Jake Caprice, Alex Hartridge, Demetri Mitchell, Sam Nombe, Will Aimson, Harry Kite, Kyle Taylor, Sonny Cox, Josh Coley, Harry Lee, James Scott, Pierce Sweeney, Gary Woods, Cheick Diabate, Jonathan Grounds (Player Coach)
In Discussions: Josh Key, Archie Collins, Kevin McDonald

Released: Jamal Blackman, Jack Sparkes, Jevani Brown, Jonathan Grounds (Player Coach)

Jack Sparkes (22) is a good attacking left back who can also play left midfield. I preferred him over Lewis Page when I watched Exeter. He's still very young and has made 84(24) league starts for Exeter and scored 6 goals. He can put some decent crosses in.

Jamal Blackburn (29) was the Wycombe keeper on loan from Chelsea who was said to be on £13,000 per week. 167(2) league starts. He's also been at Sheffield United, Rotherham, Bristol Rovers and Huddersfield Town. I'm sure lower league clubs looking for a keeper may be interested in him.

Jevani Brown (28) was previously at Cambridge United and Colchester United. He scored 14 goals last season for Exeter City and made 66(14) league starts in total for Exeter and scored 19 goals. He has 179(31) league starts in his career and has scored 39 league goals. He is a very good attacking player on his day but does seem to blow hot and cold and score in bursts.

Josh Key (23) (right back) and Archie Collins (23) (centre midfield) are also very good young players who I'm sure Exeter will be trying to keep.

Portsmouth
Under Contract: Colby Bishop, Reeco Hackett, Denver Hume, Paddy Lane, Tom Lowery, Haji Mnoga, Joe Morrell, Marlon Pack, Joe Rafferty, Sean Raggett, Toby Steward, Zak Swanson, Ryley Towler, Liam Vincent, Connor Ogilvie, Josh Oluwayemi and Harry Jewitt-White
Offered New Contract: Josh Dockerill
In Discussions: Ronan Curtis and Jay Mingi

Released: Clark Robertson, Michael Jacobs, Louis Thompson, Ryan Tunnicliffe, Kieron Freeman, Jayden Reid, Alfie Bridgman and Dan Gifford

Clark Robertson (29) would be a very good signing as a left centre half. He also played left back for Blackpool. He has won promotion from League 2 with Blackpool and from League 1 with Rotherham. He's also from Scotland which must score a few more points. Sign him up.

Kieron Freeman (31) must also be on our short list bearing his mind his connections to Nigel Clough and he can play right back and left back. He's also from Arnold. He was supposed to be coming in the January transfer window but then the Cowleys got sacked which threw a spanner in the works. He has 201(29) league starts and has scored 15 goals. He played 9 league games on loan for the Stags under Paul Cox in 2011-2012.

I think we have also been linked in the past with midfield player Ryan Tunnicliffe (30). 245(76) league starts and 14 goals. He's from Heywood near Rochdale.

Colchester United
Under Contract: Sam Hornby, Will Greenidge, Tom Dallison, Fiacre Kelleher, Arthur Read, Alex Newby, Matt Jay, Gene Kennedy, Junior Tchamadeu, John Akinde, Tom Hopper, Connor Hall, Donell Thomas, Jake Hutchinson, Samson Tovide, Ryan Lowe, Frankie Terry, Ted Collins, Oscar Thorn, Noah Chilvers, Ossama Ashley, Al-Amin Kazeem, Marley Marshall Miranda, Chay Cooper, Jayden Fevrier, Harry Beadle, Kaan Bennett, Bradley Ihionvien

Released: Ryan Clampin, Luke Chambers, Tommy Smith, Luke Hannant, Cole Skuse, Alan Judge, Freddie Sears, Kieran O’Hara, Tom Eastman, Lordon Akolbire, Emyr Huws, Billy Cracknell, Harvey Sayer, Lion Bello, Benedict Bioletti

Col U try to change their name from Ipswich B by releasing all their former Ipswich players.

Centre half Tom Eastman (31), is released after 12 years at the club. He made 384(25) league starts for Col U and scored 25 goals.

Ryan Clampin (24) was a good young attacking left back a couple of seasons ago but he has lost his way due to injuries and had an unsuccessful loan spell at Dundee. He would be worth inviting to training for any club looking for a left back.

Hartlepool United
Under Contract: Callum Cooke, Tom Crawford, Josh Umerah, Dan Dodds, David Ferguson, Oliver Finney, Jake Hastie, Alex Lacey, Euan Murray, Mikael Ndjoli, Brody Paterson, Joe Grey, Mo Sylla, Edon Pruti, Matthew Dolan
In Discussions: Connor Jennings, Nicky Featherstone, Ben Killip, Pat Boyes

Released: Leon Clarke, Jamie Sterry , Peter Hartley, Mohammed Niang, Wes McDonald, Brendan Kiernan

Hartlepool are bound to get offers for their striker Josh Umerah. 38(3) league starts and 12 goals. 15 goals in total. Could be a target for a club down South like Gillingham, Col U, Orient etc as he is from London and started off at Charlton Athletic.

David Ferguson is not a bad left back making 43 league starts last season and he could also attract interest. Edon Pruti (21) could also be another EFL target. Callum Cooke (26) is too good for the National League when he can be bothered to turn up.

I'm surprised they have released Jamie Sterry (27) who has been a good right back for them. Former Walsall player, Brendan Kiernan (30) may also manage to get fixed up with another League 2 club.

Jevani Brown fantastic player but I think he has a domestic abuse charge or something similar which is why he hasn’t played since January and is getting released.

Not surprised at that, I was surprised to see he has been released but I'm guessing it's more of a case he has rejected a new contract.

Hartlepool offered Sterry a new contract but he expressed his desire to explore other options apparently. I agree, he’s looked very lively when I’ve seen us playing them over the past couple seasons. He could be a good and not very expensive option if we want to bring in some right back cover.

Hartlepool fans are saying on their foruns that Jamie Sterry is injury prone. He has made 22, 37 and 27 league starts in the last three seasons. He was supposed to be rejoining Dave Challinor at Stockport in January but apparently Hartlepool asked for too much money. Carlisle is also being mentioned as well as a return to South Shields in National League North.

Port Vale have released forward James Wilson (27) who started off at Manchester United and who is a quality player. He does seem a bit injury prone though and does not score a lot of goals. He had a good season at Port Vale when they were promoted. He's a player who you think should have done a lot better. I think the same about another former Salford and Port Vale forward Devante Rodney (24) who is younger and who I keep thinking is on the verge of a big season. He made 31(9) league apps for Rochdale last season and scored 11 goals.

2022-2023 17(8) league apps and 4 goals
2021-2022 38(3) league apps and 9 goals
2020-2021 17(7) league apps and 7 goals
2019-2020 11(1) league apps and 2 goals

Vale fans views on James Wilson is that he is a high quality player and a level above but he's on big wages and is out injured too much. They think he will go to a big spending club who can afford a luxury player who may be injured for half the season e.g. Wrexham or Stockport. Some of them would have loved to have kept him despite his poor injury record just for the points he could help them win.
