Fully fit squad - what would be your team?

Postby Paulstag » Sun Mar 26, 2023 6:56 am

If we had a fully fit squad to choose from who would be in your 18 and what formation would you play?

You've copied that question from a personal email from John Radford to Nigel Clough.

I’d agree with that. The only other issue I might have with it is losing Hewitt’s threat down the right but that’s probably harsh on C Johnson.

Flinders

Harbottle Kilgour hewitt

Johnson.McLaughlin

Maris Reed Quinn

Akins Swan.

McLaughlin and Quinn play too well together to break them up and it allows Hewitt to float across the two wings. It’s rough on Clarke but he’s more of a battler than a creator and would come on for Reed if he’s on a booking or tiring. I’d go with Akins to hold the ball up but it won’t be long before Gale is replacing him.

I’d go with Flinders as he’s more commanding and I think the defence trust him more.

Pym

Hewitt Kilgour Harbottle

CJ Reed Maris McLaughlin

DKD

Akins Swan/Oates

OR

Pym

CJ Hewitt Kilgour McLaughlin

Clarke Reed Maris

DKD

Akins Swan/Oates

Either way - Callum Johnson, Hewitt, Kilgour, McLaughlin, Clarke, Maris, Reed, Boateng, DKD, Akins, Oates - a very good base to work from for next season in league two.

Bit of a simplistic question to be honest; some first XI selections would be better suited to beat one opposition to another. That's the whole point in a squad, isn't it?

I'd suggest that the only positions that would change less frequently is the goalkeeper and perhaps a couple of central defenders; the rest is a selection that best fits in to combating the pros and cons of the opposition.
Sorry to be pedantic by stating the glaringly obvious.

I would agree to many alternatives to make it simple.
For league 2 we have a strong 18 when all are fit

No we don't, as soon as our only left sided defender gets injured we're screwed. Our first 11 is strong, but the squad is badly comprised, ageing, contains players the manager does not want or rate and has glaring gaps at CB and LB. He's had 2.5 years and whilst our injuries have been a little higher than normal, this only further highlights the mistakes he has made. Gale and Law should be on loan, Johnson should be at Walsall (poss not Cloughs fault) and we have one space left in the outfield squad permitted, that's room for 4 players, that's where top 3 has gone.

If they are all available it depends upon the style of play , the opposition and form . Interesting that most of the above selections include Akins and Hewitt . Both have been previously classed in the donkey role who should never wear a Stags shirt again .

Only by those who can’t see beyond their nose. Akins has been a bit dodgy at times but I feel the potential in Hewitt was always obvious to see.

Ditch the WBs idea, we’ve not had the players to execute effectively all season.

442 playing through the midfield for me (Reed, Clarke, Quinn, Maris). Maybe harsh on DKD

Back Four of Johnson Hewitt Kilgour Macca

Keeper Pym - everyday of the week and especially Saturdays and Tuesday

Up top I’d have Akins and Oates

As valid as it might be as an opening post on a discussion forum it does miss one vital element. That element being...

"my squad and formation would be...."

I fear PaulStag is in need of some tweezers for all those splinters!!

Come on, PaulStag, don't be afraid. You've posed the question for others to stick their necks out, how about your good self?

Akins would be my super sub. Let Oates and Swan tire defences out. Obviously you need a bit of rotation, to account for form, injuries and the opposition (if they have a specific weakness or strength we can deal with) so it's not set in stone.

Having thought about it. Maybe Akins and Swan to begin with with Oates coming on after 60 minutes. The a after a few games of doing that rotate it and have Swan on the bench and Oates start.

Macca is a huge loss in that left side. Maris is a huge loss in midfield. Those 2 plus Alfie, Hewitt, Akins and Oates are the every gamers…for me. Then, on a game by game basis. When fully fit anyway.
