Ollie Palmer Again

Postby tillydog123 » Tue Jan 31, 2023 10:36 pm

Watched Wrexham match with Sheffield U
How does Palmer and his agent keep getting him into decent clubs and deals
He does not score much and is very bang average player but he does get away with it somehow
Anybody else feel the same…?

It takes maybe 10 seconds at a push to google him and see that he’s already scored 14 goals for them this season.

No - he’s very effective and much changed from when he left us.

No, I don't agree with you at all.

He's got 28 goals in 48 National League games for Wrexham.

I watched the game. I thought he played alright.

If Ollie had scored in that goalless draw game at the Mill against the cheats instead of hitting the post then he would have been an hero.

Remember the old Matt Green v Oli Palmer debate/ debacle
Goals: games ratio, Palmer now far and away the better of the two, it's not even slightly close

Not all Martin - I think he’s a good player at this level.

Palmer has scored 28 in 48 games in the National League for Wrexham. 0.58 goals per game.

Green scored 54 in 87 games in the National League for us. 0.62 goals per game.

I'd say that's very close records in terms of scoring in that league and Green comes out on top.

If you look at their whole careers Palmer has scored 0.3 goals per game. Green scored 0.26 goals per game. Palmer on top but it's close, especially considering Green played until he was 36 and you could argue Palmer is still in his prime and will go downhill and score less goals in the next few years.

Give me a Matt Green in my side over Palmer any day of the week and twice on a Sunday.

Yeah, but we all know Green’s penalty goals don’t count in stats.

Ollie Palmer was pretty crap for us, but he is utililised differently for Wrexham and has been for the clubs he was at after leaving us.

Not my cup of tea as he has you having to play in a different sort of way to get the best out of him.

I'd say the National League is always going to be the level where that type of player will shine well enough.

Spot on. One showed class too and the other is a weapon.

It was one of those misses where you wonder how he missed it.

It was virtually impossible

IMO I thought Ollie Palmer did ok. He was a right handful when those long throws came in from Tozer. His scoring record (at Wrexham) speaks for itself. Andy Cook's doing similar at Bradford.

I always liked Ollie and thought he was given an unfairly harsh time by some of our fans (like so many players). I even quite enjoyed his villain role, taunting us while an Orient player, but anyone suggesting he's half the player Matt Green was wants their head examining.

Ollie Palmer is easily good enough to play for a bottom half League 1 club. He scored 13 goals for AFC Wimbledon in 31(15) league and FA Cup games before Wrexham signed him. There are not many 6 foot 5 strikers who are as mobile as him.

Here's a couple of questions for you which I mentioned to some Stags fans at games earlier this season:

Ollie Palmer or Oli Hawkins?

Ollie Palmer or Lucas Akins?

Discuss

And I’m sure Akins has played in the Championship…I might be wrong.
