Good comparison Geoff Hill. Build and fair hair as well as playing style.

I think that Akins played really well tonight and was my Man of the Match. He got involved and showed some first class touches. I have been a critic of his for much of the time but if he can play as well as he did I can see why Nigel is persevering with him.

Fair play to him, maybe he just needed time to settle.
As long as he scores a hat-trick on Saturday he'll be sound ;)

Lucas played well. He was my MOM against City. Great to see George Maris and Ollie Clarke back in the midfield as well along with Jordan Bowery up front. We missed them on Saturday.

"Lucas Akins has been voted as Stags' Man of the Match from last night's Papa Johns Trophy win over Manchester City under-21s. The 33-year-old recorded 28% of the vote after netting a goal and providing an assist in the Stags' 3-2 win. Youngster James Gale finished second. The striker received 26% in the supporters' poll and bagged his first Mansfield goal. In third place is Kellan Gordon on 16%."

I was torn between Lucas and James but thought Lucas deserved it for the amount of stick he’s been getting on here and his sheer determination last night. There were others who played well but Lucas put in a much improved performance and rightly took the plaudits.

To be fair I think upfront as a lone hold up striker is where Akins' best position is, with a midfield like ours that come past him and he can hold up, shield, lay off and/or go out wide for the ball to be part of an attack. He doesn't really have the touch and speed of thought to be ball playing a lot further down the field - if he was receiving a ball from a throw in on the edge of our penalty area I'd have palpitations, but receiving a ball from a throw in on the edge of an opponents penalty area then he can make things happen.

Tbf Pear Cider you were right in your post, Akins was being shoe-horned into the side in any position and was not performing well.
I personally don't think NC was helping him by playing him in those wrong positions.
Akins is now in his best position and deserves the praise he is getting as he has played well in the last few games.

It takes a lot more than you give credit for or a lot more would be on here saying the same. Plenty of time yet though I suppose.

He was excellent today, by far his best game in a Stags shirt.

He wasn't as good as Lapslie though. ;)

Couldn't believe it was him today. His terrible identical twin seemed to have had the day off and we had the one we thought we had signed.

Even when he took his heavier/poor touches today, he directed them into spaces where he could run into and not waste possession like he has done so many times in previous games, much to our frustrations.

I too will eat humble pie if he can keep up this sort of level consistently.

65 goals in305 appearances for Burton not enough of a hint that he can become very consistent in a league below ?

So pleased with Akins performance today. He has been poor but that was mainly because he was not playing in his preferred position.Hope he goes on to upset his critics.Clough seems to know what he is doing.Keep the faith.Boateng didn't play today.I expect him to take Clarkes place in the future.Easily the best midfield in this division.
