Steve Charles - Dave Beasant penalty save still haunts me

Postby Chadman » Wed Jan 25, 2023 3:54 pm

A couple of nice pieces here by Nick Harrison from his interview this week with Steve Charles.

Charles is guest of honour at Wrexham v Sheff Utd on Saturday - two of his former clubs.

if i remember right he was extremely well educated as well as a pro footballer which at the time wasn’t the norm, remember an interview with him when he spoke about the time when Tony Kenworthy took him for his first afternoon drinking lol

always came across as a really nice guy

didn’t we sign him from Scarborough, might be wrong

Steve Charles scored some great penalties in his time at the stags. He was a great player and at least Dave Beasant went on to win the cup.. and saved a penalty again...

I made sure we had a couple of Charlie goals in lockdown

He was a good player. I came over from Belgium. If it’s any consolation, it haunts me too

I can see it like it was yesterday, I had a feeling he'd miss and unfortunately I was right, fantastic day though we played very well if I remember correctly.

Was a great match, I went out in Mansfield that night and met Kevin Kent, he was gutted and said sorry that the lads didn’t get us over the line. They did their best and made us proud to be a stag.. It was as if everyone pulled together even through defeat the feeling was that we were all part of the stags family.

I remember that penalty miss like it was yesterday. We had Wimbledon on the run, and feel had we equalised there was only going to be one winner. Sadly it was not meant to be. Following our Freight Rover win we had a belief that we could beat anyone at the time, so it was gutting to go out in those circumstances.
