Gaffer encouraged by trio’s return to training
mansfieldtown.net, Mon 23 Jan 2023

Mansfield Town manager Nigel Clough is encouraged by the return to training of Ollie Clarke, Riley Harbottle and Lucas Akins ahead of Stags’ league clash at home to Doncaster this weekend.

Mansfield host Rovers following the postponement of Saturday’s scheduled fixture at promotion rivals Northampton Town.

The Stags’ chief hopes the added boost of three first team players edging towards contention for the club’s return to One Call Stadium will help fire his side to a first victory of 2023.

When asked on the injury latest, Nigel said: “Kellan Gordon is still on it [the treatment table] but he’s got a chance of training this week as well.

“Anthony Hartigan has had his operation on Friday [and] everything has gone well. [It was] Successful, just the three months now of rehab for him.

New boy Louis Reed happy to link up again with first manager Nigel Clough at Mansfield Town
chad.co.uk, By John Lomas, Mon 23 Jan 2023

Midfield ace Louis Reed is delighted to be back working under Nigel Clough at Mansfield Town and inside his first week at the club believes he has already seen enough to know Stags have a great chance of glory this season.

Barnsley-based Reed moved to Mansfield from promotion rivals Swindon Town at the end of last week to sign for Clough, who gave him his debut as a 16-year-old at Sheffield United.

His hopes of a debut were dashed at the weekend when the trip to Northampton Town was postponed, but he said: “It's been a really enjoyable first week. They are a great group of lads.

“Obviously I am back with a manager I have worked with before and the only disappointment has been not being able to play on Saturday, so I am looking forward to the weekend.

yes.

Nigel Clough told iFollow Stags:

“It has been a quiet few days, it always is over the weekend.

“We are just waiting now in terms of the outs if there is any interest or offers for any of our players.

“I think getting the three in we have and Danny returning, it's like four new players and we are quite happy with that.

“If there is a wild card one that crops up we will look at that.

Mark Stevenson: "So you might just be looking at one (potential incoming)?"

Clough: “I think so yes. If the squad gets healthy in terms of injuries then I think just one.

“But if it isn't one then that's just fine too. We think we have three good players in and Danny coming back.

“Obviously we will have to see what happens with Danny as well but I don't think there is anything immediate with him at the moment. As far as we're concerned he is back in the squad.”

Mark Stevenson asks about Clough's meeting with Danny Johnson.

“The meeting went fine. Danny understands there are 20 games to go. If nothing is agreed with another club then he will be with us.

Mark Stevenson asks "are you expecting him to stay"?

“You never know what might happen with a week still to go in the window. It's a little bit up in the air and out of my hands certainly.

"But as things stand he will be in the squad on Saturday."

Clough makes me want to bang my head against a wall repeatedly.

Two out you could say unexpectedly in Hawkins and Lapslie. Hartigan out for the season. So 4 out you could say.

At the beginning he said 3 in, before the outs. So you could argue we could expect up to 7 new faces in. (so another 3 in, 4 if DJ goes) Which I assume every fan would be happy with, as it finally gives us some depth, as we do get injuries, your likes of Harbottle, Gordon, Ollie Clarke, Quinn, seem to struggle with injuries or lasting a full game. We need depth, instead of square pegs in round holes, get the plumber in to fix that leak, not next doors recommended handyman who once did a good job with Aunty Sheilas radiator she couldn't tighten up once.
Me personally, young left back on loan to cover Macca, another strong cb, as Harbottle was only ever meant to come here to gain experience, and a winger come striker with a bit of height.

He said from the start of the window it would be one in, one out.

As Musings said, I don't think Clough at any stage said he would be increasing the squad size.

If we keep DJ, Gale and Law go on loan and Hartigan out, we have 19 outfield players. That's quite clearly not enough, especially when you look at the age of some of the players.

How could you say 4 out?

2+1 doesn't and never has equalled 4.

A manager who has improved the finishing position of the club he's been at in 21 of his 25 seasons in charge doesn't learn?

Hawkins and Lapslie in interviews when asked what was their aim this season they both replied promotion.
Then joined a club bottom of league 2 in January,
No surprise for Clough if other clubs pay more its hard to keep players.
He always runs a tight squad, keeps unhappy players to a minimum.
It also give quality over quantity

I think it’s 20 with your scenario Rob. But there’s no indication that Law and Gale will be allowed to leave unless we get other bodies in.

Perhaps they think that neither club will gain promotion this season and Gillingham have the best chance next year. They will have far better insight into what’s going on while we can only guess.

I do think though that both have moved for financial and location reasons.
