January Transfer Window

Postby Sneag » Sun Nov 20, 2022 7:54 am

My biggest fears in the tranfer window:

1) we sign more crocks & pensioners.
2) we don't sign anyone till Jan 31st, by which time another 5 games may lave been blown.

I know Januarys are a tough window but seeing as the deficiencies in this squad have been bleedin' obvious since Darrel Clarke kindly pointed them out for us, I'd hope the management team already have their targets lined up.

I am not digging Broomo out here like most posters like to do and start an argument.....I am pointing out a simple fact that Broomo has on several occasions.

Nigel has stuck to everything he has said about signings in every interview with regards to targets and the amount of bodies he is bringing in.

There has only ever been the odd exception due to circumstances.

As it stands, he has kept saying we won't be busy in January and I am sure he has never even mentioned signing any centre halves at all.

So it looks to me like he will stick to being stubborn and he believes our defence is good enough.....which we can all see it most certainly isn't.

Might as well have a back three of Lever, Moore and Hicks....it is that poor and slow right now.

We don't need to be busy. We need to be fast & smart.

Two good signings could make a world of difference & for me they both need to be centre backs.

Yes, and not midfielders who can convert to makeshift centre backs. Rather, the Krystian Pearce type who only want to play that position.
Clough would argue that we've recently kept clean sheets with the current defence, but that seems to hinge on how lucky they get. I'm never confident that the defence will cope with any attack. They often get away with it, but that's all. The goals against stat reflects the area of weakness, and yesterday exposed it fully.

Very true, we've had clean sheets through good luck not good defending.

I would expect the lad from Charton to be announced on New year's day.

Yesterday after what Nigel said in the interviews he now thinks that JJ is finished so the penny has dropped he now knows we need a centre half.
Those accustomed to privilege may feel that equality is oppression.

Handing out 2 and a half year contracts to mid 30’s players is insane really isnt it? O’toole and Akins both signed on 2 and a half year deals! Madness!

He did get that contract, I believe.

And the consensus on this board at the time (when he was playing out of his skin and our best player) was that we should offer him whatever was required to avoid him accepting an offer from Doncaster.

There’s a 31 page thread on the topic although not all clearly about the length of the contract!

Nah, go back five and throw in Linighan and Richardson? Perhaps Allardyce?

Jayesemi? He's barely played for them since our interest. Could be a goer. My Charlton mate reckons he's too good for us, but I can see it happening.

Sounds like a standard MTFC signing.

Need a new LCB with some athleticism and new RWB minimum if we are sticking with the back 5.

You cannot rely on Gordon being fit, and no other option is good enough in that position. As I’ve said if you want this formation to be successful then your wing backs need to be very good. We are constantly plugging these areas with makeshift solutions and it just isn’t good enough if top 7 is the aim.

Hewitt is decent enough there but he is needed in the back 3 for me because we don’t have enough good options in that area.

A perfect window, for me, would be to ship perch to someone like Notts County, sell JJOT. Bring in 3 centre backs of a high quality. At least one left footed (ideally 2)

I'd share the sentiment with getting a RWB in but with Swan and Oates returning, and signing 3 centre backs would mea Hawkins becomes a viable option too. I think that'll force Akins back to RWB and the new lad or Gordon wouldn't get a game, wasting a wage.

Dream on.

Nigel said one in, one out. If the new left back proves his fitness I'd expect him to sign and maybe send one of the young lads out on loan.

Don't expect big movement from Mr Clough, he has never done such things and he is on record as saying January is a tough window etc.?

Much depends on Nigel's ambitions for the club and whether he wants to stay with us or not. Equally, much depends on the owner, does he still have the will to foot the bill or to change the leadership team again whilst living a new life in Portugal?

Hewitt is very, very good at RWB, we need him there so I'd sign at least 2 more CBs. As OWS has said, I doubt we will.

Bowery was on the point of leaving in the last window so I wouldn’t be surprised if the same club comes in for him. Who would blame him for going .

I’d be sorry to lose Jordan and hope he stays. It may not only be Jordan who is maybe looking to move as some of the others may also be unsettled. I can see Kellan Gordon being one who feels he would like more game time.
