Sheffield Wednesday FA Cup preview

Postby Sweden Stag » Tue Nov 22, 2022 10:29 am

For the first time in three decades, the Stags will face Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup, although the teams have clashed in other cup competitions since then (League Cup in 2015, EFL Trophy last season during our then dismal League Two run).

In 2015-16, the Stags travelled to Sheffield for a league cup fixture for the second season running as the Stags during the previous season travelled to Bramall Lane, headquarters of Sheffield United.

That meeting was to be the first one between the Owls and the Stags for almost 25 years in any competition. The then last time the sides faced each other, it was in the FA Cup 3rd round at Field Mill aka One Call Stadium on January 5, 1991. The Owls won 2-0 and in that side, two future consecutive Stags bosses played for the Sheffield side. The names are Carlton Palmer and Peter Shirtliff. Palmer is also one player who, on the field, has featured for both sides. And all of Sheffield Wednesday’s victories against the Stags prior to the League Cup one in 2015 were recorded in the FA Cup over the space of exactly 45 years between the first and the latest meeting.

Their first one was in the 1945-46 season, which was the only one with games home and away, mainly due to the finish of WW II. The second one was in the 1966-67 season, in which the Stags reached the fourth round for the first time in sixteen years. In 1950-51, the Stags kayoed the Owls’ main rivals to a 2-1 scoreline in a replay in front of over 20000 at Field Mill after playing out a goal-less at Bramall Lane on January 27, 1951 in front of a bumper 48696 crowd. That gate was bettered at Hillsborough on February 18, 1967, when 49049 watched the Owls win 4-0 in the fourth round.

And the next Stags FA Cup goal against Sheffield Wednesday, hopefully on Saturday, will the the Stags’ first-ever against the Owls in that competition. To reach the second round, the Stags recorded a first-round 1-0 victory for the fourth season running, possibly an FA Cup record. 2019 a late winner against Chorley, giant-killers two seasons ago, at headquarters, and for the subsequent campaigns on the road for three seasons running (Sunderland twice in a row, this season at Barrow) while the Owls reached the second round this season by beating fellow League One Morecambe at headquarters.

In the meantime, the sides had clashed in the League as well, all in the space of five seasons in the third tier interrupted by the Stags’ so far only campaign in the second tier. When the Stags won their first Championship in 1974-75, the Owls were relegated to the third tier for the first time after a decline which had started already at the highest level after their FA Cup final defeat against Everton in 1965-66. And the Owls failed to beat the Stags in any of the eight FL games between the sides as well as at Hillsborough and at Field Mill. The first-ever FL meeting at Mansfield between the sides saw the Stags win 3-0 on Easter Monday April 19, 1976. That game also saw Sandy Pate’s first-ever league goal for the Stags.

The latest FL game between the sides was played on March 15, 1980 at Field Mill where the sides played out a1-1-1 draw. The game at Hillsborough in October 1979 ended in a goal-less draw, which became the Stags’ first away point that campaign.

While the Stags reached the quarter-finals in 1968-69, beating Sheffield United on the way, the Owls have won the FA Cup on three occasions, all before WW II, the latest one as far back as in the 1934-35 season. Since then, the Owls have lost on their subsequent FA Cup final appearances, 1966 against Everton and 1993 against Arsenal, who in the 1978-79 season were made to play five times in the FA Cup third round before the eventual 1978-79 winners Arsenal broke the Sheffield Wednesday deadlock.

Quite a few players have appeared for both sides, some even when the Sheffield club was just called “The Wednesday” just before the Stags’election to the FL in 1931. Some players include Kevin Pressman and two of the 127 players used by the Stags outside the FL, Craig Armstrong and Paul Heckingbottom. Giles Coke has also quite recently played for the Owls. One goal-keeper, Lewis Price, who played a few games for the Stags at the very end of the 2013-14 season, was on Sheffield Wednesday’s books in 2015-16, did not play in the Owls’ 2-0 home victory against Bristol City on the opening day then but featured in a handful games shortly after the League Cup game in 2015. Another one, Jake Kean, was also on the books of the Owls for a while, but without playing a single minute for the Hillsborough outfit.

Danny Williams managed the Owls before doing the same at the Stags and oversaw a Sheffield Wednesday relegation from the old first division in 1969-70. His reign at Hillsborough ended on New Year’s Day, 1971. He was also Stags boss in their home goal famine 1971-72 Division Three campaign.

Ryan Tafazolli, now at Wycombe, was the Stags scorer at Hillsborough in 2015. In that game, James Caton, later at Dover, played his only Stags game on loan from Shrewsbury when he came on as sub in the second half.

Played for both sides: Craig Armstrong, Albert Ashley, Ray Blackhall, Ian Bowling, Charles Brelsford, Tony Brien, Leigh Bromby, Horace Burrows, Sydney Carter, Horace Clarke, Giles Coke, Simon Coleman, Brian Cox, Richard Cresswell, Teddy Davison, O’Neill Donaldson, Sam Ellis, Paul Evans, Greg Fee, Fred Ferrari, Charlie Goddard, Lee Gregory, Matt Hamshaw, Ted Harston, Paul Heckingbottom, Harold Hill, Lawrie Madden, Dick Mellors, James McCarter, Gordon Owen, Carlton Palmer, Lee Peacock, John Pearson, Kevin Pressman, Lewis Price, Jack Roy, John Ryan, Polly Searson, Jon Shaw, Sam Taylor, Samuel Todd, Reg Trotman, Imre Varadi, Nicky Weaver.

Played for Sheffield Wednesday, later managed the Stags: Carlton Palmer, Peter Shirtliff. Managed both sides: Danny Williams.
