Burnley 3 v Mansfield 2 1991

Postby Showaddywaddy » Fri Sep 16, 2022 10:38 am

I can’t get the link to copy over but for those interested I’ve found the full game on YouTube.

A proper 4th Division ding dong promotion 6 pointer. There’s no commentary but you can hear the Stags following contributing to a cracking atmosphere. The game is probably remembered for Wilko’s two quality strikes but watching it back now so many of the challenges were really crunching and full blooded, you definitely wouldn’t get away with them today.

It’s a brilliant watch, despite the score. Football was just better back then.

It’s under 09-11-1991 Burnley v Mansfield Town (full match).

This is one of the best games ive been to and will live long in my memory.

It is just a shame we didn't have a good keeper ;-)

Great stuff. We had the highlights during lockdown (below), but I've never had the full match.

6 mins 16 sec. That tackle now would have every player surrounding the ref , a red card , players facing up to each other and god knows what else . 1991 nobody batted an eyelid , no appeals , no rolling around just get on with it

Fantastic stuff, & just after that Phill Stant leaving his mark on the defender... Christ, these days the game would stop for five minutes & the defender would be bangng his hand / arm / foot / leg or possible all four into the turf in apparent agony, only to spring back into life once the offender had been yellowed or sent off!
I backed my car into a cop car the other day, he just drove off, sometimes life's okay...

It was a brilliant game.

Probably the most I've every enjoyed a game we lost.

As others have said, I was at this game as well.

We played very well but gave away stupid goals.

It was just a pity we didn’t score more than them.

I was there with my Son and a friend...somehow we finished up in the Burnley Stand and when Mansfield Scored we stood up as usual cheered and looked around ...silence...think we were lucky to get out alive..the abuse was terrible..mind you in those days I was still in my " Mr Britain Shape and condition " and up for it...Game we should have won.. a great day out,,,,thanks for the Memory

It was a great game, despite the defeat and the parking ticket I received despite a copper telling me it was OK to park where I did. Two good attacking teams going at it hammer and tongue.

Was a great game.. Keith Curle and Stanty spoke to us through our car window after the game and thanked us for coming and have a safe journey. Proper football win or lose players didn’t winge and just got on with it and never earned what they do today.

Keith Curle?

I can remember the atmosphere it was incredible. The noise when the goals went in was electric.

I think it was the main match on radio 5 live as it was an international weekend.

It was an international weekend and the away following of 3000+ was swelled with fans of Forest, Sheff Wed etc all cheering on the stags....one of the best games I have been too and we fully deserved to get something out of the game.
Jason Pearcey had a nightmare and was it Joe Jacobs (or similar name) that gave us the fingers when they scored their 2nd and 3rd goals ??

I thought it was on BBC radio 2 which used to carry sports commentary and sports report at 5pm on a Saturday.

Joe Jakub, horrible player, dirty, niggly and a wind up merchant. He had a large dose of karma at Field Mill the following season when he was sent off for Burnley in a game we eventually drew 1-1. It was made all the more satisfying as he threw his toys out of the pram and refused to leave the pitch for several minutes.

Remember the day we’ll. My mate’s dad was a scout for Burnley and so the three of us sat in the main stand near the halfway line, complimentary tickets. I couldn’t resist cheering Wilko’s first, at which point I got lots of looks from those around me. When they made it 2-1, all the people around me starting chanting “who are ya” at me. I managed not to cheer when we equalised again and the abuse I got when they made it 3-2 was fun…. Still a great match

As I remember access to the away stand was a dead end. Plenty of Burnley coming the other way at the end looking for it.

now that really was a front two

Wilko & Stanty

apart from one or two from Eccles, Clarke etc teams these as a pair for real quality & the reason some of us who watched them understand how good we could be
