Steve Hartshorn

Postby Dan » Thu Sep 08, 2022 7:05 pm

I’m afraid to say that Steve passed away this afternoon. His wife Debbie has posted on Facebook that he had been really poorly recently. I thought I’d post it on here because most of us on here knew Steve. He was a cracking lad, gave me some of the best times of my life with the Follow The Yellow Brick Road fanzine and football team.

Rest in peace mate, you will be missed.

Steve Hartshorn

Postby cuddlylion » Thu Sep 08, 2022 7:23 pm

I’m saddened to inform the people that knew Steve through the Stags that he passed away this afternoon.

Steve was a fantastic bloke and gave up many an hour following the Stags.

Some of you may know him from Follow The Yellow Brick Road fanzine and football team. Steve loved producing the fanzine and the laughs it gave everyone with characters such as Simon the Spirite and poking fun at Uncle Colin. The football team represented the club in playing games against other supporters teams and playing and winning at Wembley was one of his proudest moments whilst supporting the Stags.

Steve also reported on the stags games through various media outlets like the Observer and Recorder. Steve also was a fantastic co commentator with James Bradley on Mansfield 103.2 and on Stagsplayer.

Steve was a loving family man and his love for his wife Debbie and their dogs was immeasurable.

Thank you Steve for the friendships and memories you have created. You have touched a lot of hearts.

RIP Gaffer.

Absolutely gutted to read this, a true Stag, a funny and caring guy and friend.

FTYBR spanned many years and although playing for them after Dan it was some of my happiest years as a Stags supporter. The Stags were largely rubbish but the away days with FTYBR were brilliant and I made many new Stags friends along the way. That was all thanks to Steve and his hard work and love of MTFC and FTYBR.

Rest in peace Boss.

Didn’t know Steve personally, but his commentary on 103.20 is one of the sounds of my childhood. Remember listening to many games on the radio that I wasn’t old enough to go to. RIP.

I'm so sad to hear this. Steve was simply a top bloke. FTYBR was a magnificent publication over many years, enjoyed by so many. And I was so proud to have commentated with him, again over so many years. RIP Steve xx

Bloody hell Steve, I thought he'd be around forever. Really sorry to hear this, spent many a late hour with him working on articles and ideas for FTYBR. He lived and breathed that fanzine at the time and it was almost an extension of him: the sweat, late night print runs and good money after bad that he poured into it turned it into a real forerunner for fanzines when they were at an embryonic stage, and was held in very high regard by others that went on to be huge. Hadn't seen him for years but whenever I did he was never without a fag in his hand and that massive broad grin on his face. Very, very sad news.

I have shed a tear at this news today, have followed his recent struggles through facebook.

FTYBR was the first publication I picked up when following the Stags and went onto inspire me to produce a poorer fanzine version later on.

Had the pleasure to meet Steve a few times as our paths crossed, but make no mistake about it, his was a much better fanzine than ours, and he was a terrific inspiration to me, top top bloke.

So sad that we lost Steve today, a massive stags fan only a few months after my mate Jim a west stand upper regular died, it's just not the same.

RIP Steve, terrible news.

A pleasure to know him and befriend him and have him as the boss with FTYBR.

Loved his commentary and if I recall rightly a particular certain moment versus Counteh at Mardy Lane where I think he had a moment of the giggles as we scored a late winner.

Thoughts with Debbie at this difficult time
