Former Stags Thread

Postby Tippy Tappy Football » Wed Aug 24, 2022 9:35 am

As promised to Hitchcock Shins, here is my former Stags Thread so news on all former Stags can be posted on one thread.

I bumped into Ricky Miller at Grantham Town last night and he told me that Peterborough paid him a £100,000 signing on fee when he signed for them from Dover Athletic. He said he was very suspicious that Steve Evans paid a £30,000 loan fee to Peterborough and then only played him as a sub 4 times before disappearing to become the new Peterborough manager. He did not speak highly of Evans, Barry Fry and Darren Ferguson.

He said he was really pumped up for the Port Vale away game in March the following season because he wanted to show Mansfield and David Flitcroft what he could do. He went on to score both Port Vale goals in a 2-1 win which cost us automatic promotion.

He said the Stags fans were great but he just could not work out why he was not given a chance to start by Flitcroft and Evans.

You cannot base that on 8 sub appearances Jake. We only won two out of the last 12 games under David Flitcroft and he was just used as a sub 4 times.

Very sad news. Former Stags loan keeper, Lewis Price, who played five league games for the Stags at the end of the 2013-2014 season under Paul Cox has been diagnosed with testicular cancer. He was on loan from Crystal Palace and said to be earning £9,000 per week at Palace.

Get well soon Lewis

Good to see former left back James Jennings after the Stockport County game. He made 45(1) league apps for the Stags and scored 4 goals including 13 apps in our Championship winning season in the Conference. He is now the Head of Professional Player Support at Stockport County.

I asked him about his "I Had Trials Once Podcast" and he pointed to the top training pitch and confirmed that on his first day's training for the Stags Richie Sutton and Lindon Meikle were belting the living daylights out of each other while Paul Cox stood with his arms crossed watching them. He then made them sit together at lunch afterwards.

Jorge Grant was sent off for Hearts last night as they failed to qualify for the Europa League group stage. He was sent off for a second yellow after diving trying to win a penalty.

How many former Stags are currently playing in Scotland?

Jorge Grant (Hearts), Jamie Murphy (St Johnstone) (6(2) apps and 3 goals), Ryan Sweeney (Dundee) (44(2) apps and 3 goals)

At least 2 other fairly recent ex-Stags have played in the Europa League this season too: Adi Yussuf for St Josephs in Gibraltar and Timi Elsnik for Olimpija Ljubljana

What an underwhelming signing. Think he scored once against Carlisle, I can't remember anything else he did

Tyrese came on as a second half sub and scored a 95th minute own goal to send Rochdales game against Accrington to penalties. He then missed his penalty.

Centre half Jamie Sendles-White (28) has rejoined Welling FC. He made 7 league starts for the Stags on loan from QPR under Paul Cox and Adam Murray in 2014-2015 making his debut in a 1-1 away draw at Portsmouth. He played holding midfield in Adam Murray's first games as manager - a 1-0 home win against Plymouth and a 1-0 FA Cup replay away win against Concord Rangers managed by Danny Cowley who had brought an end to Paul Cox's managerial career with a 1-1 draw at Field Mill. We were then beat 3-0 away at Luton and he returned to QPR.

Alex Baptiste has signed for Waterford so he will be competing against Ryan Burke at Bohemians and Aaron O'Driscoll at Longford Town. Any others in the Irish League?

Waterford are owned by Fleetwood owner Andy Pilley.

Alex Baptiste previously played for Wanderers.

O'Driscoll is now at Shelbourne in the Premier Division. Dan Carr, who we had on loan from Huddersfield also plays there. Waterford and Longford are in the First Division, Bohemians in the Premier.

Pat Hoban is still at Dundalk
Sean Kavanagh (left back we had on loan from Fulham) is at Shamrock Rovers
