Boss to name strongest possible side in Rams cup clash
mansfieldtown.net, Monday 8th August 2022

Manager Nigel Clough says he will be putting his strongest possible team out tomorrow night but will not be risking any players as his men take on Derby County in the Carabao Cup first round at One Call Stadium.

The Stags welcome the Rams to north Nottinghamshire in a cup contest between two sides strongly affiliated with the boss.

The gaffer’s squad picked up several knocks in the club’s 1-0 victory over Tranmere on Saturday afternoon, but the manager insists he’ll pick his strongest possible XI.

Speaking to the local media at RH Academy in his news conference today, he said: “We’ve got four or five [knocks].

“We used the five substitutes which we will be doing. Oli Hawkins came off with a tight hamstring, Rhys Oates [an] ankle [injury], Hiram Boateng, ankle and hamstring [problems] and one or two others as well.

“We’ll just see how they are.

“We won’t be risking anybody.

Mansfield Town boss Nigel Clough puzzled why big cup tie with neighbours Derby County is not being televised
chad.co.uk, by John Lomas, Monday 8th August 2022

Nigel Clough said he was puzzled why Mansfield Town's mouthwatering home Carabao Cup first round tie against League One neighbours Derby County tomorrow (Tuesday, 7.45) was not being shown live on television.

Clough intends to name as strong a side as he can against his old club and said: “This will be a good cup game against a local team.

“I think they will sell out their allocation and there will be a good crowd and a good atmosphere.

“So I am still a little bit puzzled why it's not a TV game. It would have made a good spectacle for the TV, especially when you throw in the local element.

If Rooney was still in charge it would have been on TV. There's not as much attention around them now they don't have Rooney and have been bought by new owners

It's not on TV because it was probably anticipated that the "strongest possible side" was always guessed to be after all those with niggles were excluded with it so early in the season.

The League Cup is of little interest to anyone until the last 16 at best and probably more likely the quarter final stage.

Maybe that's why there's no new defender ;)

Although we have played some nice stuff in the Salford and Tranmere games

But didn't threaten the opposition goal a great deal.

We definitely did, in both games. The stats back it up.

I must have blinked then?

What I mean is we never looked like beating the oppositions keepers, shots that miss or are saved count for nowt.

Agreed, clear lack of quality in the final third, stats or not.

Still think the new system looks good though.

If we weren't making any chances I would be worried but that's not the case.

Yeah it just needs working on, which is to be expected.

I would still like another striker personally but not sure if that will happen.

I can't see a link to what Gordon said so posted that.

I notice he mentions wing-back being his best position.
