Mike Carter was superb in 1979 on loan from Bolton. Four goals in eighteen league games, playing as a winger helped preserve our third division status.

Totally agree with this and others on Duncan McKenzie. If I remember correctly he did two spells with us in quick succession for some reason but he was the best I ever saw in a Stags shirt loan or otherwise

What about a loan X1 that never signed permanently?

In my time as a Stags fan since 1983 and off the top of my head I remember

Bishop
O'Riordon
Freeman Fortune Bromby Woodman
Warne Whiteman Piper
Donaldson Walker

Im sure there are others, but that list took me 5 mins.
Don O' Riordon was absolutely sublime in the few months he was with us.....head and shoulders above everyone else in the sweeper role
Jason Danskin was superb too......but I am sure we signed him from Everton after his loan spell ended at Wembley in 87 ??...If not, he replaces Piper

Was John Reed a loan player too? From Sheffield United I remember, I was a young lad back then so my view of him as a good player might not be reality.

You are probably right. Just before my time but I can remember Duncan playing for Leeds and Everton and being brilliant. To play devils advocate the Stags were flying and well set for promotion just before he joined us. We faded second half of that season losing more games than winning and failed to go up. Donaldson had a bigger impact. Scoring 6 goals in no time. Stags went from also rans to contenders. The period with Donaldson and a few months after was magic. The goals tally was amazing.
