Team for second leg

I’d go down there with the intentions of having a go at them from the start.

I would definitely like to see Hewitt back in at RWB, I think he gives us more attacking threat down that side - very unlucky not to be playing imo

4-3-3:

Bishop

Hewitt O’Toole Hawkins McLaughlin

Clarke Maris Quinn/Laps

Bowery Oates Akins

A lot more legs, running and ball winning ability in that 11, particularly in midfield. If Clarke isn’t ready then start Wallace instead and put him on the left of the three in midfield.

Can just see it now - Longstaff anchoring the midfield with his immense ball winning ability, Bowery in centre midfield, Hawkins drifting into little pockets behind Northampton’s midfield and getting on the half turn, Johnson coming in from the cold to run them ragged.

That’s a brilliant side , Bishop can be a rush goalie and come into midfield and use his height at corners .

I'd go with that. Laps gives a bit more pace which we lacked in the second half.

Well, I'll put my own "out there" side out. 4-2-3-1. I'll assume Quinn is out or not fit to start and on the bench if needed desperately.

Bishop
Hewitt O'Toole Hawkins Macca
Maris Perch
Akins Lapslie Bowery
Oates

It's flexible. We can move to a back 3 with Perch dropping back into defence and Bowery moving to partner Oates. Or switch to the diamond, moving Bowery/Akins up top. Perch has played holding midfield before and some say he's very good at it.

Here’s my go then:

Bishop

Macca (lb)
O’Toole
Hawkins
Hewitt (Rb)

Maris
Quinn
Longstaff
Lapslie

Oates
Bowery

Picked Hewitt over Perch just because he has the mobility and legs. I now prefer perch at centre back but feel we need the height of Hawkins and aggression of O’Toole.

Picked Lapslie over Murphy just for his running power and ability on the counter attack. Think Murphy would come off the bench for me.

I tried to get Akins in, his height and work rate is useful but picked Bowery because of the additional goal threat.

Ps I know it’ll be wrong and I think Clough May pick and unchanged side if everyone is fit.

He’s dropped down the order, Hawkins and O’Toole are settled now so you don’t disrupt them.

I guess you can say the same about Hawkins but you never know which player is gonna show up. Faz can be unreal on his day, he can also be absolutely hopeless but it's a big risk imo throwing him in tonight.

I would like to see Hewitt in at right back .

Also think we need Perch in the side to give us that calm confidence.

So I would go with

Bishop
Hewitt, Perch, Hawkins McLaughlin
O’toole
Lapslie, Maris, Clarke.
Bowery, Oates.

Assuming Quinn is unfit and Longstaff needs a rest.

Bringing Murphy and Longstaff on late on if we need a goal.

I wuld definately play Clarke. Him and Maris together can break up their midfield. Maris on his own was unable to do that.

From Saturday I'd say the team will hardly change. Murphy's playing definitely, the back 4 are probably staying the same, Oates and Bowery are definitely starting. The only question for me is whether Longstaff or Quinn are fit enough, if not then Clarke and/or Lapslie will come in. I cant see Clough changing much personnel wise unless forced to, whether we like it or not.

I think it's more likely that he'll change to 5 at the back than it is that he'll make anything other than injury forced changes from Saturday - to deal with the aerial bombardment. Hewitt in at RWB for Quinn and Clarke in for Longstaff, Perch in the middle with JJOT and Hawkins - Maris and Clarke clattering anything in the centre and Murphy and Bowery supporting Oates. He may even get JJOT to sit in front of a Back 4 of Hewitt, Perch, Hawkins and Macca, with Clarke and Maris just in front of him.

everyone seems to prefer hewitt over perch at rb, got to agree with this, as good as perch is we have to play our strongest team and hewitt is a better full back at the moment
