Fantastic achievement especially considering poor followings from the likes of Sutton, Salford and Forest Green dragging the average right down

WOW. Always thought seasons 80 to 85 had poor attendances. 79/80 must have had big gates v Sheff Clubs and Grimsby. Others would be poor. Remember several sub 2000 crowds in 1981 for a few years.

As you say the average gate was skewed by 3 massive crowds, 11,000+ v Sheff U, 10,000+ v Grimsby and 16,000+ v Sheff Wendy.

That inflates the average per game by around 1,000 over the season.

Agreed but without these we would have averaged around 4300. My memory playing tricks as i thought our crowds imploded around 79 alongside many others due to the rapid rise in unemployment. Bet season 80-81 dropped by around 50% then.

You don't need to bet, I've listed them out, see the link

Having started watching Stags in the mid 70s that fall off in home support was quite a shock to the system.

Being outnumbered at home is never nice.

Oh. Found the link. Brilliant. Amazing that 78/79 and 21/22 were identical at 5151. Pity we don't have away statistics back in 79 to compare.

Great news!
Maybe I'm being a bit thick, but if it was 5207 in 2003/4 and 5467 in 79/80. how can this season's 5151 be the 2nd highest average? Surely it's 3rd? :?

The word you're missing is "since".
Highest since 2003/04. Second highest since 1979/89.
