Newcastle Trophy preview

Postby Sweden Stag » Sun Nov 07, 2021 8:27 pm

For the first time in fifteen years, the Stags face a Newcastle team in a cup competition. Then, in early January 2006, the Stags were just about ten minutes from earning a home replay in the third roundwhen Alan Shearer hit the only goal of the game to progress. A progress that Newcastle’s near-neighbours Sunderland didn’t manage against the Stags at headquarters for the second season running last Saturday.

Prior to the FA Cup third round tie at Newcastle in 2005-06, the previewer wrote: “The reward for disposing of Conf high-fliers Grays Athletic: A mouth-watering FA Cup third round tie at Premiership side Newcastle with Michael Owen (out injured) and Alan Shearer. That awaits the Stags on the first January-weekend in 2006. And this will be the first time ever the Stags will face Newcastle in the FA Cup. But the sides clashed in the League Cup first round in 1992-93. Then, the Geordies narrowly went through to the following round over two legs.”

Here are the details:

On August 19, 1992, the sides clashed at St. James’ Park in front of just 14083, way far below the gate that watched the game in 2006, which was 41459, among them over 5000 Stags fans. The Geordies won 2-1 after two goals from Peacock, while Phil Stant netted for the Stags in the second half. The line-ups, courtesy of Rothmans Football Yearbook, were as follows:

Newcastle: Wright, Venison, Beresford, Howey, Kilcline, Scott, Brock (Carr), Peacock, Kelly (Quinn), Clark, Sheedy.

Mansfield: Pearcey, Parkin, Withe, Spooner, Gray, Holland, Ford, Fairclough, Stant, Wilkinson, Charles.

On August 25, 1992, the teams played the second leg at Field Mill in front of 6725, the Stags’ second highest home attendance that season, only bettered by 6828 against Stoke in the league a month later. As the second leg became goalless, the Geordies went through 2-1 on aggregate.

The clubs fielded the following players at Field Mill:

Stags: Pearcey, Parkin, Withe, Castledine, Gray, Holland (Wilkinson), Ford, Fairclough, Stant, McLoughlin, Charles.

Newcastle: Wright, Venison, Ranson, Howey, Kilcline, Scott, Carr, Peacock, Kelly, Clark, Sheedy.

There are interesting facts from the above line-ups.

Chris Withe, who started his league career at Newcastle, managing just two games up there, played for the Stags in both legs, while Brian Kilcline, who later were to wear an Amber shirt, represented Newcastle as did David Kelly, who in the latter stages of the 2001-02 played a prominent part in the Stags’ promotion push as he did for Newcastle in 1992-93, netting 24 times. Another player, who didn’t figure at Newcastle early on but did so in the latter stages of 1992-93 was Scott Sellars. He, too, was a Stag during the run-in of the 2001-02 promotion season.

But there are several more players having appeared for the Stags as well as the Geordies.

One player appeared for the Geordies when they were outplayed in the 1973-74 FA Cup final by Liverpool: Stewart Barrowclough.

Another one played two league games for Newcastle that same season and at the end of that was transferred to the Stags to play a prominent part in BOTH promotion squads of the seventies: the late Gordon Hodgson.

The goalie in the Stags’ famous FA-Cup run of 1968-69, their best-ever, also appeared for Newcastle: Dave Hollins. To name a few well-known names, say Bill Curry, Ray Clarke, Stuart Boam and Albert Scanlon.

Here are the facts of the Stags’ 1968-69 FA Cup run: Stags in 1968-69: 1st round Tow Law 4-1 (home, scorers Ledger (2), Keeley, Sharkey); 2nd round Rotherham 2-2 (away, scorers Keeley, Sharkey), 2nd round replay Rotherham 1-0 (home, scorer: Ledger), 3rd round Sheffield United 2-1 (home, scorer Roberts D (2)), 4th round Southend 2-1 (home, scorers Sharkey, Roberts D), 5th round West Ham 3-0 (home, scorers Keeley, Roberts D, Sharkey), QF Leicester 0-1 (home).

Newcastle, by the way, have won the FA Cup on six occasions, three of them in the early fiftes, the latest in 1955 in the Jackie Milburn days, and been losing finalists seven times. But the Magpies have sometimes also crashed out heavily against lesser opposition and were even forced to replay against non-league Hendon (1-1 at home was followed by a 4-0 win at Watford in a 1st round replay in 1973-74). Newcastle’s biggest crashes:

The 1971-72 season, drawn at home to Hereford, then Southern league: The game at Newcastle ended 2-2, and in the replay at Hereford, Newcastle were kayoed in extra-time, from Radford and George, Macdonald netting for the then division 1 side.

In the 1963-64 season, Newcastle were drawn against Southern League Bedford at home, and lost 1-2.

In the fifth round of the 1980-81 campaign, Newcastle were paired against Third Division Exeter at St. James’ Park. The tie on February 14, 1981, ended 1-1 and Newcastle were forced to take the long journey down to Devon for a replay at Exeter’s ground, also called St. James’ Park. Exeter went through easily to a 4-0 scoreline and the headlines then surely read: Newcastle were kayoed at St. James’ Park, but NOT their own one. Stuart Boam, later to be manager for the Stags, sadly unsuccessfully, starred for Newcastle in both fixtures against Exeter in early 1981.

Meanwhile, one of the Stags’ worst-ever FA Cup howlers took place in the North-East in the first round of the 1967-68 season. Tow Law kayoed the Stags at home to a 5-1 scoreline. In the following season, the Stags took revenge at home. The rest of 1968-69 is history................

This time around, the Stags will face the Newcastle U 21 in the JPT Trophy. But both sides are already out of this season’s competition.

Played for both sides: Stewart Barrowclough, Ray Blackhall, Stuart Boam, Gary Brazil (but he didn’t play a league game for the Stags!), Paul Cannell, Ray Clarke, Charles Crowe, Bill Curry, Alec Gaskell, Gordon Hodgson, Dave Hollins (the goalie in Stags’ famous FA Cup run in 1968-69!), David Kelly, Keith Kennedy, Brian Kilcline, Thomas Knox, Tony Lormor, William McKinney, Dennis Martin, Terence Melling, John Mitten, Gary Nicholson, James Perch, John Ryan, Albert Scanlon, Scott Sellars, Barrie Thomas, Imre Varadi, Harry Wake, Kelland Watts, Chris Withe. Eric Steele was on Newcastle’s books without making their league side around 1973-74, mainly due to Iam McFaul at that time. Wilf Humble, who played in the Stags’ first promotion side of 1962-63 and also featured when chasing another promotion two seasons later, was on Newcastle’s books as an amateur.

Managed both sides: Charlie Mitten. Played and managed the Stags, later assistant manager at Newcastle: Peter Morris.
