I doubt very much if Maris will be fit enough to play Saturday.

Nevertheless it's good to hear him say he is ok.

What's the protocol for concussion substitutions?

I thought I read somewhere they HAD to have a 10 day break.

Nige definitely said it was a concussion sub and we had an extra sub spot if needed.

An interesting listen.

Nigel answers the question about changing the shape and playing a different way. He only mentioned playing 3 centre halves and not playing 4-4-2 with wingers but it appears he’s considered it even if he didn’t mention it specifically.

Not a lot to argue with and I can see the logic.

The FA Concussion Guidelines suggest that there should be an initial 14 day rest period (Stage 1) and Day 19 is the earliest return to play. Therefore a player with concussion could be out for 3 weeks.

Stage 1 - Rest (14 Days)
Stage 2 - Light Exercise (24 Hours)
Stage 3 - Non-Contact Training (24 Hours)
Stage 4 - Football Specific Exercise (24 Hours)
Stage 5 - Full Contact Practice (24 Hours)
Stage 6 - Return To Play (Day 19)

However there is also reference to an Enhanced Care Programme which can be followed by professional clubs to allow an earlier return.

"In some circumstances (such as Professional Clubs, International teams and Academies), there may be a enhanced level of medical care available which allows closer supervision of a player’s care and graduated return to play (GRTP). In these instances, a shorter timeframe for return to play (RTP) may be possible, but only under strict supervision by the appropriate medical personnel as part of a structured concussion management programme."

The minimum time a player can return to play in an Enhanced Care Setting is 6 days.

Stage 1 - Rest (24 Hours)
Stage 2 - Light Exercise (24 Hours)
Stage 3 - Non-Contact Training (24 Hours)
Stage 4 - Football Specific Exercise (24 Hours)
Stage 5 - Full Contact Practice (24 Hours)
Stage 6 - Return To Play (Day 6)

The overall guidance is "If in doubt sit them out"

I don't think George Maris will play on Saturday. He also had a head injury at Leyton Orient so the club needs to be cautious.

I wouldn't risk him personally. Obviously medical staff know what they're doing but still. The luck we've had with injuries plus it seems a bit strange to me that it's 3 week minimum but 6 days of a professional club/academy etc.

Also he said this morning that he is feeling a bit groggy. Surely that means he's still at stage 1? Stage 1 is recovery from the after effects and symptoms of concussion? Then they move onto the training stages to make sure it doesn't "trigger" effects again. So Sunday is the earliest at this point. I could be wrong but seems logical to me.

It’s 10 days in rugby and should be the same here. If he’s admitting he’s still a bit woozy, then he’s clearly got an issue and no way should he be considered for selection.

I agree, he's a very important player for us and he should be given time to make a full recovery.

I don't think we have the enhanced care to get him back in a week, I'm sure it's more likely 3 weeks before he's back and then we find out he's broken his neck knowing our luck.

I doubt it will be 3 weeks before he's back. Probably won't make Saturday, but I doubt it will be long after that.

Reading the guidelines it looks like a minimum of 19 days if he's had a concussion.
He doesn't have to lose consciousness to have concussion and the signs of how he feels and what he remembers seems like he did, I remember Clough saying about Pearce how they would follow the guidelines to the letter and I'm sure he will do the same for Marris.

Like I've said I don't think we have the enhanced care facilities to get him back in 6 days, your talking neurologists, scans etc.. On a daily basis.
I hope I'm wrong and more than anything I hope he doesn't need it, we've got Law, Ward and Quinn coming back so I don't think we should worry or rush.
