When did booing your own team actually start?

Postby Chadman » Mon Oct 11, 2021 9:43 am

A genuine question - when did booing your own team become a thing?

It certainly never happened as I was growing up. Thankfully on Saturday it was only a minority and the rest of the fans rightly applauded a very depleted side for at least getting a clean sheet and vital point.

I think it may have been England fans watching the national team that may have started the trend but I can't be sure - the years dim the memory.

Sure, as an individual, you would sometimes shout at a player for a poor pass or missing a great chance. But you never booed as a group of people.

Young fans these days will assume it is the norm, which it has become in this instant gratification society, and has always been the case.

It is something i could never do, but some would say, Cheer when you are happy, Boo if you are disappointed, but to Boo my own would not sit right with me

then yes, not on. a team stripped of confidence with two of their players taken off. Battled and performed well.

very encouraging imo

There were a few boo’s, but hardly noticeable.

At least it’s given one trick Lomas a twitch in his underwear.

The support so far this season has been incredible.

i’ve been watching since the early 70s and there has always been booing when teams didn’t show any effort or didn’t seem bothered

Has booing our team ever had a positive influence on performance?

No, it is extremely self-defeating.

YorkshireStag - I watched Forest, Stags and Notts games in the 70s and can remember shouts of abuse and anguish but never saw any of those teams booed off at half or full time, not once.

Anyone else remember it?

Beano - you really don't want to be thinking about twitches in my underwear! It's not healthy.

Were they booing the team or the manager
The team are performing to the best of their limited ability.
The manager on the other hand recruited half the team, is playing players out of position and a formation which doesn't suit the players
If they loss the next two games I suggest the manager follows the teams off and see the reaction he gets then.

I can remember in the 70s and 80s when fans would show they were unhappy with the team and the manager by starting a slow handclap in the West Stand. There might also have been a few chants of "what a load of rubbish".

Yep I remember that.

As for booing, if it’s after the game and warranted then that’s the right time to express displeasure. Can’t remember ever doing it myself but I must have got close at Ebbsfleet a few years back. :D

Didn’t we have a thing where the crowd started off clapping slowly but then built to thunderous applause?. I seem to remember swinging my rattle in time to that (those were the days) and banging my feet on the back of the North Stand to try and increase the noise levels :D

You should have been there on Dec 15th 1976 when Matlock beat us 5-2 in the cup at home, now that was booing.

I agree my memory was more of the slow hand clap or chants of "what a load of rubbish" "you're not fit to wear the shirt"

I blame the booing on Strictly

I prefer saying/doing nothing and just walking out.

Players already feel like crap, why compound it?

Slow clap, "what a load of rubbish", booing, and the like are not going to improve the situation. There's an old saying, if you've nothing good to say then say nothing at all.

I was there and remember the total sadness and pain to this day, as a fan it hurts to hear your own supporters turn on your team and can only imagine how players feel hearing it.

This season must be one of the best for supporting our team in difficult scrappy games with no wins.

How can you support a team if you have no faith in the club or manager,
I respect David Sharpe and the remit from the owners to move the club forward, make it self supporting and appoint a Manager who will make the tough decisions

You talk about the Matlock game, but that team had the guts and determination to come back on the Saturday , and beat Wrexham 2-0, while they were promotion chasers. First sign of pressure and this team wilts. There's no leadership on the pitch or off, just a lot of hand wringing and blame.

I was there and don't remember the boos, but I was only a young kid and my Grandad dragged me away before they scored the 5th.

I remember the slow handclap and the “what a load of rubbish” chant too. A lot of that in the late seventies and early eighties as the glory days of 1974-1978 came to an end. I don’t remember booing in those days though.
