What's all this suggesting the next two games are critical?
From a fan's perspective it may be urgently needed to clear away the gloom, but realistically a turn around of form as late as next March will be enough to preserve league status.

If we lose against Barrow and Oldham some are suggesting that it would be terminal. C'mon, get real.

Because most of us have greater hopes than preserving league status, as do the chairman and manager.

At this rate we make the playoffs... next season in the National league. But then I don't think this shower would finish top half in th National.

Has to be said , it's going to be long cold miserable season. If we finish 22nd it's a result.

Posted this during pre-season :

Position after 10 games - last five years

Nothing is decided at this stage of the season. Look at Barrow during the season in which they returned to the EFL. They were closer to the relegation after ten games in which they had lost six. Look at York during their first relegation season from the EFL way back in 2003-04. They won their first four games but none of their last twenty (five draws). Look at Rochdale when they first were promoted from the basement way back in 1968-69, our FA Cup QF season. Rochdale were well inside the bottom half around halfway then, had won just four and drawn 12 out of their first 22 games. Look at Hereford after their first EFL season following election in place of Barrow. The Bulls won just two out of their first fourteen league fixtures. York, Rochdale and Hereford examples taken from previous seasons at current League Two level.

50 Points for Stags to Stay Up ?

Postby KirkbyStag2 » Sat Oct 09, 2021 5:46 pm

Well, today that was a flashback to non-league football, two very poor teams.

For the third consecutive October I would gladly take 22nd place to keep Stags league status.

Current Table

PLD..W...D...L...PTS...PPG
.11...2...4...5....10....0.91

Required for 50 Points

PLD..W...D...L...PTS...PPG
.35..13...1..21...40...1.14
.35..12...4..19...40...1.14
.35..11...7..17...40...1.14
.35..10..10.15...40...1.14
.35...9...13.13...40...1.14
.35...8...16.11...40...1.14
.35...7...19..9....40...1.14

Stags current PPG 0.91 over a season would be a potential relegation total of 42 points.

After 11 games

2019/20 Dempster 10 points
2020/21 Coughlan 7 points
2021/22 Clough 10 points
Champions 1974-75, 1976-77, 2012-13

Make no mistake. This is gonna be a long hard season. We simply aren’t anywhere near good enough. The run of good form might come but it won’t be good enough or long enough to make a difference. It will be a survival run just like last season.

Expectations get the better of us at the start of every season , getting to 50 mark is the first thing to achieve , then see where we are from then with games left in the season to see if playoffs or promotion are still a possibility .

It’s scary, I read the records of Dempster and Coughlan and it was no surprise to see us near that. I do feel that Clough has been affected by more factors that are out of his control such as having so many centre backs out when we were already light. That said it’s a results based business and we need to find one from somewhere.

That's the league table when Dempster was sacked.

This is the league table after 11 games.

https://www.11v11.com/league-tables/lea ... ober-2019/

Scary really. It pretty much the same except Dempsters side scored 2 more goals than Clough's did but also conceded 1 more.

On balance. Dempster took a side that finished 4th with one of the tightest defences and replaced walker with Maynard and Cook (not "bad" signings at the time) and produced that. Clough's taken a leaky defence and I'll say impotent attack and reproduced the same results (imo not improved the defence and attack it is still a tad early to say for sure bwcaus eweve got our best forward covering defence)

It’s very hard to believe, but we need some changes

firstly with luck both in injuries and referees.

secondly clough could do with being more dynamic with subs though not always possible.

I hope i’m wrong with wedge port vale and tranmere at home and northampton and exeter away in the next 4 games, i can’t see where we get a point in that.

Hopefully of course we go get all 12. i remember us ending the long run of wins under cox at exeter.

A bit of positivity,

after 11 games last season Bolton had exactly the same record as Stags this season, Won 2, Drawn 4, Lost 5 and Bolton were promoted, finishing in 3rd place.

A bit of negativity,

after 11 games last season Grimsby had 2 more points (12) than Stags this season (10) and Grimsby were relegated, finishing in 24th place.

Yeah and trusting the players a bit more. He has to set them free not chain them in fear. The only player to play with freedom is Keaton Ward. Let him play his way and it'll rub off on the rest.
