Can Stags finish in the TOP 3

Postby KirkbyStag2 » Thu Sep 30, 2021 7:19 pm

I'm estimating Stags will need 71 points to make the Play-Offs.

Current Table

PLD..W...D...L...PTS...PPG
..9....2...3...4....9.....1.00

Required for 71 Points

PLD..W...D...L...PTS...PPG
.37..20...2..15...62...1.68
.37..19...5..13...62...1.68
.37..18...8..11...62...1.68
.37..17..11...9...62...1.68
.37..16..14...7...62...1.68
.37..15..17...5...62...1.68
.37..14..20...3...62...1.68
.37..13..23...1...62...1.68

Stags current PPG 1.00 over a season would be a potential relegation total of 46 points.

The next 2 home games, Barrow & Oldham, could be pivotal as 2 wins would see Stags move into mid table and give the team renewed confidence to keep rising in the table.

Alternatively, a couple of poor results would probably see Stags in the bottom 4 with nearly a quarter of the season completed, and to make the play-offs Stags would need to transform from relegation form (11 games) to Top 3 form (35 games).

So, 2 wins and the table could look so much better, 2 more poor results and it could be a long season in the bottom half.

I posted that sober, high on positivity, although I do think the next 2 home game are pivotal, if results don't significantly improve soon I'll change the thread title to "50 points to Stay Up"

As the pandemic now transitions to a state of endemicity; I can put my epidemiological models to one side (or at least not have as many to produce each week) and find time for some football modelling again!

This season my model is estimating that we will finish on 61 points and in 11th place and sadly another season of mid-table obscurity.

[Scientific prediction models are notoriously bad at accurately predicting sporting league tables accurately of course!!]

Oli Hawkins stays at centre half, get Stephen Quinn back in the team and Danny Johnson, Rhys Oates and Jordan Bowery start banging in the goals up front.

.......or Will Forrester turns out to be brilliant!

I think Will Forrester will turn out brilliant and my only hope is we can keep him for the season.

The next 2 games are critical, win them and we are away, loose them and its backs to the wall for the remainder of the season.

Laplise needs to step up to the table and provide the service Danny Johnson needs to flourish.

I am going to say we will finish 7th

Does anyone know how many games/points we were on last season when GC got sacked? I think it took us 12 attempts to get our first win didnt it?

Top half finish at best for me unless we have a cracking transfer window in January to kick on , oh wait a minute we’ve had a few of those already..

Both transfer windows where in unprecedented times, the first in full lockdown and no fans, this summers was a strange one with both players and clubs unsure of the future.

I'd be happy enough with top half. It's all about improving on previous seasons for me. We had a relegation scrap on thanks to GC. We've gambled a couple of times and it's not paid off like we would have hoped in the past year.

We've got to see improvement. Am I correct in saying that Clough hadn't managed in league 2 before? Could just be teething problems? I'd love the play offs, I just can't see it as things stand. However a couple of centre backs fit and available playing their best and I feel we will start picking up form. Enough to get into the play offs? Cox managed it before, twice, so we know it's not impossible, especially from where we are now. We need defenders available as soon as possible though.
