John Radford, programme notes: safe-standing terrace

Postby Martin Shaw » Mon Sep 06, 2021 10:15 pm

John Radford, programme notes (Harrogate game), Sat 4 Sep 2021

"It was the first visit that Carolyn and I have made to the Envirovent Stadium (Harrogate, on Tuesday) and our impression of the ground reinvigorated a previous consideration about safe-standing at football stadia. Following our first-hand experience of Harrogate's ground on Tuesday, we are exploring the possibility of a safe-standing terrace on the Bishop Street side of the ground. This would be more cost-effective than the previously intended new tier stand and could aid an already-excellent atmosphere inside One Call Stadium. We know there is a desire amongst a proportion of our fanbase for a standing area and this is something we'll be looking into over the course of the season. We'll update you with our findings when appropriate to do so."

Could they fit the wind out sunshades too as the Sun is straight in your dish on that side. :D

On the one or two days that the match day is sunny, at least you get warmed up a little. It's been a while since I stood on that terrace, but it used to be very popular so couldn't have been too bad.

Just been looking at pictures of the stand they have, looks very smart apart from a floodlight going straight through the middle. Only took 4 months to build.

If it makes Field Mill look complete again and adds to the atmosphere then anything is an improvement

That’s a joke of covered seating and standing.

The floodlight pillar is very stupid, also I don't like the terracing at the end where there's no barriers, so as people queue to get out someone could push at the top and cause a domino effect. I'd put offset short gaps in the barriers so that there's never a direct route from top to bottom. The general look is OK.

I stood on Bishop St terrace as a kid and loved the match experience there. So many characters including, ‘Come on mi bonnies’ fella and smoke swirling down the terrace from the local houses.
Mansfield Town, my club even though been exiled in London since 1983.

No, a proper cover/roof worthy of the name. There are fishing umbrellas with more protection.

That's one of the exits/entrances to the terrace. The steps at the end are painted yellow and there is no standing in that area. I had a good walk around it last Tuesday. It's a decent view standing at the top.

Waste of money. Invest in the team. Get in League 1 and then think about it.

This would be great. I disagree that it would be a waste of money. The team has had significant investment over the last few years and now needs time to settle in. There is a massive over reaction going on at the minute and all of our players are good league 2 players, regardless of if they have a few bad games.

Also, what happens if we get promoted and we need to strengthen the squad again? Do we put the stand project on the back burner then too?

The clubs infrastructure is important. A decent stand would improve the match day experience and enable us to attract bigger away followings in big games.

Must be embarrassing for JR when he invites his comrades and they sit there staring at something built in the 1920s with an allotment shed perched on top. :o

No point. We can't fill the stadium in League 2. We will gain nothing. Would probably be better spent improving the toilets.

Completely disagree with you. Three sided grounds like ours are truly awful, this should have been done years and years ago. What we will gain is a proper 4 sided ground, the ability to host more away fans, install a better TV gantry, maybe a dedicated family area or the option to stand, something many fans want to do. It's simply not true to say we will gain nothing.

I would rather the Bishop Street Stand be levelled than remain how it is.

The small terraced stand at Harrogate is very smart and if it can be done for a reasonable price, even better.

The main advantage of more capacity in the Bishop Street is that you can sell more tickets to the away clubs who have a big following which means more income for the club. We could have sold more tickets to Bradford City fans. This is more likely to happen in League 1 and above though.

It needs sorting. Three sides of the ground are very tidy and one is a monstrous carbuncle
