Jayden Charles started today at left back for York City alongside the likes of Sean Newton and Mark Beck. They lost 4-0 away to Gloucester City. A bad start to the season for the Minster Men.

Bigger attendance there than down the the road at Forest Green.

Jaden Charles joins York City on loan

York City Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of Jaden Charles on loan from Mansfield Town.

Steve Watson has moved to sign the 19-year-old on a one-month deal with the squad currently hit with injuries in the defensive department.

Charles is the son of former England international Gary Charles, and plays primarily at left back, representing the Republic of Ireland at U18 level, and previously winning the Professional Development League U18 Division 1 title with previous club Derby County.

Speaking upon signing, Charles said: “It was a couple of days ago I found out about coming to York. It’s a great feeling and I’m really excited to get started.

“I’m a left back, I like to defend and I’m also aggressive.

“I’m looking to get some men’s games, go out and play and get lots of experience.”

Charles is available for selection today against Gloucester City.

The deal is subject to FA and National League approval.

Three consecutive defeats for York City as they lost 2-1 at home to Brackley Town despite having Mark Beck and Clayton Donaldson up front. Sean Newton is out for 6 weeks.

Gloucester City 4 York City 0
Jaden Charles - 4 (York Press), 7 (NLP)

Charles was involved in a couple of City’s forays forward, over-hitting one cross before getting a better one onto the head of Olly Dyson, whose effort lacked power.

Charles picked up the game’s first yellow card. He went rashly in and fast on Leadbitter, whose spinning tumble made it look a certain red. But Leadbitter got back to his feet and the referee took a moment to assess the challenge before cautioning the young left-back.

York City 1 Brackley Town 2
Jaden Charles - 5 (York Press), 4 (NLP)

York had the best chance of the first 10 minutes. Once again winning the ball in the middle, Akil Wright played the ball out left where Jaden Charles was waiting to play a good cross into the area for Donaldson, whose powerful header was tipped onto the bar.

City were somewhat lethargic coming out for the second half, Donaldson in particular appearing a bit tired, and a couple of times played themselves into trouble. Charles got himself on the wrong side of Lowe, allowing the striker to run at the defence. Charles did much better after the hour to dispossess Lowe but his ball forward, via Donaldson to Heaney, was feebly lost by the latter, a feat replicated by Duckworth not two minutes after.

York finally managed to win a game in National League North with Jaden Charles getting his best rating to date.

Spennymoor Town 1 York City 3
Jaden Charles - 6 (York Press)

Jameson made a couple of good saves in quick succession. First, Charles – who was struggling against John Lufudu – was beaten down the left. The ball was whipped in and Jameson did fantastically to make himself big to deny Ramshaw’s strike.

City regained the lead just before the break through Donaldson. A ball in from the left after patient work from McLaughlin and Charles – who had earlier teamed up to dispossess the determined Jamie Chandler – took a nick and Donaldson powered home from very close range.

I though Jaden had a good game and looked comfortable on the ball. It is though two levels below where we play, but Jaden coped well with the very physical side of the game at this level. Clayton Donaldson got some rough treatment but was always a threat. York deserved their win although Spennymoor missed some reach chances in the second half. Crowd of over 2500.

York City 4 Farsley Celtic 2
Jaden Charles - 7 (York Press)

It looks like Jaden had a decent game being involved in the build up for a goal and winning a penalty. Jimmy Spencer and James Hanson were up front for Farsley Celtic. York's game against Hereford was called off.

"Donaldson and Beck were not far away from extending York’s lead within five minutes of the second half starting. The former was played through by a lovely ball by Jaden Charles but slipped in the area after beating his man with a drag-back.

Instead of one of the three strikers, the third goal came from midfielder Michael Woods. After persistent work by Charles in the middle of the park, Donaldson was released down the left to play into the area. His cross was met by the incoming Woods, whose initial effort was blocked but he was able to bury the rebound comfortably, low to Donaghy’s right.

Donaldson added a fourth with 20 minutes to go, coolly dispatching a penalty won when a Charles cross hit substitute Jordan Richards on the arm. The veteran striker sent Donaghy the wrong way and placed his penalty in the bottom-right corner."
