Mansfield's attacking xG of 2.1 was the joint highest with Carlisle United and the defensive xG of 0.2 was the best in League 2.

So looking at that chart, Maris’ goal was about 0.03 or roughly 1 in 30 chance of scoring. Great curling shot but the keeper also made a mess of it.

Keeper definitely should’ve done better.

Something that not all football fans have! They tend to have a biased opinion so stats can provide a balance to an initial opinion. Of course stats can always be interpreted in different ways too.
For example https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/58124809 yesterday both teams had equal amounts of possession and shots and Mansfield were clearly committing more fouls! But, from other sources, more of the play was in the Newport half as Mansfield pushed forward. However you can’t even tell from that what sort of game it was. Newport were away from home and were clearly playing to hit us on the break. The only real stat that counts is the score and the points.

A brilliant, new resource using OPTA data for stats in all three EFL divisions, as well as plenty of other, all for free.

Very surprised to see our pressing stats are the best in the division, despite me thinking otherwise. Must be the midfielders stepping in behind the strikers.

What does xG ratio mean?

That’s a cracking resource!

I’m sure it will be at the centre of some of the debate throughout the year!

All the terms are defined under the 'i' dropdown - The proportion of a team’s total xG that resulted from set plays.

Hell of a stretch to say we scored from a corner Saturday unless the plan was to gift Newport the ball, lulling them into a false sense of security, have Maris make a 20 yard run & recovery tackle & trick the keeper into allowing a very savable shot bounce past him.
Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored.

Goals are often scored from corners in the 2nd phase after the corner has initially has been cleared so this is still worth noting. Leyton Orient's goal at Salford was also scored in this way. Defences cannot relax even though they clear the initial corner. Goals from set pieces/restarts including long throws are often crucial. England would have won the Euros if they had properly defended a corner.

The xG score last night was 1.5 vs 1.5, but 0.7xG was given for the penalty , so without the penalty we would have won 0.8 to 1.5.
