Season Previews and Predictions

Postby MTFCMusings » Wed Jul 28, 2021 10:32 am

Within the next week or so various publications will be releasing their predictions for the season ahead so thought a thread to keep track might be useful.

FourFourTwo magazine have us finishing 9th.

It will depend on squad depth and injuries.

I would have a full strength team finishing top three on the showings I’ve seen. That said a few strategic long term injuries could derail us especially the defence.

I don’t think we are particularly lighter than other teams as all squads are reduced, so luck with injuries/suspensions will be key.

Oddschecker have us third best price across numerous bookmakers, 12/1 behind Salford (13/2) and Bristol Rovers (11/1). It’s a really short price on Salford IMO, I wouldn’t be going near that.

I think the Barton situation will derail Bristol. He will face a lot of flack from opposition supporters especially away from home and I believe that will rub off on the team. Additionally he must have lost the respect of at least some of his players who also could be distracted.

Salford are favourites cos of who owns them.
Their squad is inferior to ours imo.
These are my opinions , if you don't like them I have others...

I don't think Stags at 12/1 offers good value. Had a few roubles on Scunny to go down at 5/1. They were falling off a cliff at the end of last season.
Hawkins and Oates at between 45/1 to 50/1 each way could be worth a look.

Clough does not predict promotions, he says lets look in Jan and see where we are, but this season is different and i think his expectations are high.
I believe a top 7 finish is possible

The reason I am so confident is because I believe we have the best midfield in the league, follow that with a new position for Mclaughlin, which allows him more time to get his deliveries in and now he has a target man to aim for and Johnson will be sniffing around him looking for goals. Lapslie offers a goal threat constantly, always running in behind and he also presses extremely high for us.

With Oates and Bowery ready to come in for them both, its a decent attacking line up, Defensively we have only really added Hewitt, so we do need 1 more Centre back but Perch is so assured at CB, reads the game perfectly, Rawson improved massively during last season and does his job effectively.

This is it boys and girls, get ready because its going to be a rollercoaster but it will end in Mansfield Town FC getting promoted.

Off the Line blog have us 3rd.

As a side note I notice that I’ve predicted 5th here and top 3 in the 442 preview  shows how your views fluctuate throughout pre-season. 442 was done on the 30th June and Off the Line on the 21st July.

I think the Off The Line Blog have come up with a good set of predictions. I think Tranmere will be up there as Micky Mellon is top drawer. Had a few quid each way on Glatzel, their new striker at 66-1. I think Port Vale and Walsall will be in the top seven as they both have managers that know what they are doing. Scunny for the drop at 5-1 looks good value.

Top 3 finish.

Not league 2 related but gone for MK Dons to go up from league 1, their strikeforce is impressive. Mo Eisa, Troy Parrett, Max Watters.

What makes you say that about Walsall mate? Isn’t it Taylor’s first senior job?

I don't know what to think.

I thought we'd do much better under GC it we were worse than we were under Dempster.

Now I'm not suggesting Clough will take us in that direction, everything seems positive but just showing how pointless and wrong my predictions can be.

We seem to have improved the strike force. Midfield is looking alright, but added to that we have Sinclair Law Ward and Stirk all improving year on year so will be.interesting to see them break into the team.

For me, there is still a Tom Naylor shaped hole in defence. A solid dependable and cultured centre back needed.

Goalkeepers seem to be improved, but still quit young for such an important position.

If Clough can sprinkle his magic and keep the midfield ticking over and chipping in with goals we could get in the playoffs.

I'll say 7th.

True, but Taylor (like Clough) isn't full of banal soundbites and I think his recruitment has been pretty decent.Players look for a decent wage packet but no one wants to work for a David Brent type manager (see our "friends" over the motorway). You cannot predict the future but I wouldn't be surprised if our two National League neighbours had new managers by December. They've probably got more managerial experience than Taylor but I know who I'd sooner have managing my team.
