more of a worry than shade is the fact we don’t seem to be able to string three passes together, this was a friendly against the Cod granted however they managed it, we looked way off the pace, apart from ollie nobody looked any good.

hey hoo we move on, two things that really stood out for me was lack of pace & our inability to string three passes together.

be interesting to hear from the manager & how honest his assessment was !

It is only the third week of training. It's going to take a while for NC to get them organised into a disciplined unit. We need that big centre half/leader signing.

Of which most of them have missed 10 days or more
Pre-season is about fitness not results.

Do agree we need a leader / captain adding to the group

Not too surprised to read we looked slow (whether that be through general fitness early in pre season, because it was hot, or just lack of pace in the team). Do think the squad would benefit from an out and out natural wide man with real pace to beat a man and liven things up when we’re looking a bit lethargic. Always gonna be a time where one will come in handy at this level and would allow us to be a bit more fluid with our options formation wise. Don’t think it’s on the agenda though as we admittedly need a CB more and he’s mentioned he’s after a midfielder and I don’t see much more business beyond that.

No need to worry at the moment. Pre-season games can be notoriously misleading. (especially the early ones).

It’s clear to me we lack pace all over the pitch, the best sides in L2 all have pacy players (they usually score against us)...it’s no coincidence our recent decent seasons has CJ etc

Clough clearly knows what he’s doing but would feel much happier with a few out and out wingers in the squad with pace

Lincoln lost 5-0 last week to Boston. Odd results happen in pre season all the time. Let's not start making judgements on the side until we actually play some meaningful games. 'Worrying' about anything you see in pre season games is daft.

This place is bonkers.... It's preseason it literally doest matter if we're playing like Barcelona and hammering everyone.

So many times even when we had the worst squads we've seen, people on here have been confident of a good season because if preseason results and performances. Was it Leicester we beat one year with Stevenson, meikle and co and folk thought we'd be top 3

NC Summary: It's all about fitness. A couple of knocks - George Shelvey (thigh) and George Lapslie (ankle). Good to have James Perch back on the pitch with George Maris. George Maris started the game very well. Rhys Oates was very positive again. Looks to get forward all the time and get shots and crosses off. Had enough chances to score. Two strikers not quite hitting the target at the moment after Retford. It was the first run out for the players who have been isolating. Thought James Perch would only play 45 minutes but he did 60 odd minutes. Stephen McLaughlin got 90 minutes in and played well. Just need to keep building up the fitness. There will be a crossover of teams for Alfreton and Hull. Need to have cover as we do not have the numbers to put two sides out with subs.

quite the opposite, Nigel Clough has added the Alfreton game as a first team game (it was going to be an XI game, ie youngsters only), to get more minutes for the players who have been self-isolating. see last part of https://stagsnet.net/match/reports/view ... tchid=1101 and https://stagsnet.net/match/reports/view ... tchid=1102

OK so in NC we trust and his main priority is fitness and no injuries - the isolations are a major disruption but they could continue.

The only thing I would say is the pre-season with Flitcroft's team was a wow, team playing well, getitng good results and they carried that into the season - just saying.

But Flitcroft's team gets a lot of criticism on here because it fell away at the end of the season !

We have had 2 bad pre seasons the last 2 seasons and we have started the campaign badly. I am a big believer that we should see at least some patterns of play in pre season.

Obviously there is still time so we will see.

It is fascinating how worried people are based on two games (one of which was at the end of a hard training week and the other behind closed doors)
We don't know what Clough wants from those games, how badly isolation has affected them and in fairness, if I gave Yorkshire Stag a million pounds he would be worried about being able to carry it.

DF's team in 2018-2019 started very slowly which was one of the reasons we did not get promoted. Drew too many games. Didn't really kick fully into gear until we beat Crewe away at the end of October and then had a purple patch until early Jan when we lost to Carlisle away and Yeovil at home. We were generally winning 3 out of every 5 games from November to Feb.

After 5 Games
W 1 D4 L0

After 10 Games
W3 D6 L1

After 14 Games
W4 D9 L1

After 15 Games (Crewe Away)
W5 D9 L1

After 20 Games
W8 D11 L1

After 25 Games
W11 D12 L2

After 30 Games
W14 D13 L3

After 35 Games
W17 D13 L5

For me we started preseason late, and it's been heavily disrupted by Covid. I know we don't see what they do day in day out, but it's not felt like a good preseason.

IMO, results don't matter, but performances do. We lost a lot last preseason, and this losing mentality carried over into the season and we were winless in 13.

We have to be fit, and we have to find a bit of form for the opener against the Gas.

Say it every season, but teams that win their opener are statistically much more likely to get promoted.
You've got to go there and come back, to know where you've been.
