Carabao Cup draw: home to Preston

Postby Martin Shaw » Tue Jun 22, 2021 4:00 pm

The Carabao Cup Round One draw will take place live on Sky Sports at 3:40pm on Thursday 24 June.
A total of 35 fixtures will be drawn for Round One, which includes EFL Cup debutants Sutton United, and newly promoted Hartlepool United.

Sheffield United will be included, while fellow Championship newcomers West Bromwich Albion and Fulham join the competition in Round Two alongside the Premier League Clubs that are not competing in Europe.

The Round One draw will see teams drawn in Northern and Southern sections, with matches scheduled to take place week commencing 9 August. Clubs are able to mutually agree an alternative date between 31 July and 4 August.

If it wasn’t for not being able to go to games for 18 months we’d be in for one of the most uninspiring starts to the season in some time fixtures wise

As long as we aren’t pressured to cut pre season short to play early.

It’s not totally out of the question we could win at home. Our midfield will be used to playing together and we should be sharper up front.

It will give us a chance to see if our defending has improved from last season. The 4-0 away defeat against PNE in the League Cup set the tone for our very poor start in League 2.

I think Broomo and Bear have said that Nigel Clough takes cup competitions seriously which we saw last season so we will hopefully not see NC resting players and throwing in youth team players as has happened in the past. It would be nice to pull off a shock and have a TV game against big opposition like Newport did last season.

1. several players have said that last season's game set the tone for a very bad start.

2. be nice to play someone different

Just look on it as another PSF against Championship opposition. Chance for the new players to gel with those already here and to see how the formation works that NC wants to use

I don't think Nigel Clough will think of it like that. Clough will want to try to win the game, he always does with FA Cup and League Cup games.

I meant it as a dig at those who wanted a glamour tie and have written us off before we play. I shall be there expecting a win and a premier team in round 2

I remember us beating Leeds away just after they’d beaten Man Utd. What’s your point ?

There’s a big difference between hoping and expecting.

You can’t expect a victory over a team 2 leagues above us, surely?

I expect to win every home game and win some away and draw the rest. Regretfully after 65 years of following the Stags my expectations have still to be realised
