Newport County - Club Statement

Michael Flynn has left his role as Newport County AFC manager with immediate effect and departs on amicable terms. Michael’s four-and-a-half years as manager have been the most successful since the club’s return to the EFL. He departs with the best wishes of everyone connected with the Exiles, and it goes without saying that Michael and his family will always be welcome at Rodney Parade. The club will now begin the process of recruitment. In the interim period, assistant manager Wayne Hatswell will take charge of the first team.

Chairman Gavin Foxall commented: “On behalf of the Board I wanted to thank Michael for all he has done for the club in many different roles. He has created many memorable moments over the years and leaves the club in a strong position. He goes with our very best wishes."

Michael Flynn commented: “I would like to thank Newport County AFC for giving me the opportunity of my first managerial post but with sadness, I feel it is the right time to step down. It has been some journey. Keeping Newport in the football league in my first few months, then the buzz of FA Cup & League Cup runs, and of course the two Wembley play-off finals. I am extremely proud of my coaching staff and players for their achievements and would like to thank each one of them for their support and hard work during my time as manager. I would like to say thank you to the board for their trust and belief in me from day one and finally, thank you to the fans for supporting me and the team throughout my time at the club. I wish Newport County AFC every success for the future."

If he's met their aims then it's been successful.

And every season we don't go up we should sack the manager and try again?

Of course not, I didn't say that. But I suspect you knew that and want another boring Flitcroft debate.

I don't want another debate, just a bit of a fun poke.

I'll take Newport's past 3 or 4 seasons over our last 3 or 4 seasons every time, though.

Me too.

He's brought them a lot of good times. Not a team I like, but fair play to them for sticking with him for four years.

It's probably a good time for Michael Flynn to move on as he's probably taken Newport as far as he can. He has said that he needs to rebuild his team again and it may take a few seasons. He probably fancies having a go at another club with a bigger playing budget. Someone will give him another job in League 2. The big teams in the National League may also be interested in him.

He was unlucky last season as Newport deserved to win the Play Off Final and were robbed by some shocking reffing. Mind you, we know all about that

I think he could get a L1 job.

He could be called in to try and do a rescue job at Donny Rovers if Richie Wellens carries on as he is.

I'm guessing Joey would phrase any parting comment rather differently

They lost, are bottom, have -11 goal difference and haven’t won a game yet this season. Get him back here, he’ll slot straight back in
