Adam Murray on two big signings for Stags and Prem target

Postby Chadman » Thu May 06, 2021 4:12 pm

Had a great catch-up with Adam Murray.

In the first of these two nice pieces with him he talks about how much he is enjoying the ride as Barnsley, under no pressure, continue to shock and surprise everyone with their unexpected place in the play-offs and the Premier League promised land in their sights.

In the second he talks about how Stags have made two stellar signings that can now bring them success, about how he has now completely changed as a coach from that baptism of fire at Mansfield and about his future plans.

Adam Murray is right that he had a very low budget whilst he was manager. JR substantially cut the playing budget in 2014-2015. He and Paul Cox did well that season to keep the Stags up although we only managed 48 points and were fortunate that Tranmere and Cheltenham were very poor. The 1-0 home win against Tranmere was crucial.

You only have to look at the club's total wages in the accounts to see that the club started spending big on the arrival of Steve Evans and that it increased further under David Flitcroft. It did not drop under John Dempster as he kept on DF's squad and added Nicky Maynard and Andy Cook who would have been very expensive.

Steve Evans and David Flitcroft spent 2.5 to 3.5 times more money on players' wages than Adam Murray.

Total Wages for Club (including non playing staff)
2011-2012: £1,344,256 (Paul Cox finished 3rd in National League)
2012-2013: £2,328,070 (Paul Cox won National League)
2013-2014: £2,071,080 (Paul Cox finished 11th in League 2)
2014-2015: £1,486,334 (Paul Cox and Adam Murray finished 21st in League 2)
2015-2016: £1,464,626 (Adam Murray finished 12th in League 2)
2016-2017: £1,884,466 (Adam Murray/Steve Evans finished 12th in League 2)
2017-2018: £3,762,389 (Estimated)* (Steve Evans/David Flitcroft finished 8th in League 2)
2018-2019: £5,015,644 (Estimated)** (David Flitcroft finished 4th in League 2)
2019-2020: £5,706,953 (Estimated)*** (John Dempster/Graham Coughlan finished 21st in League 2)

* = £1,600,221 for 6 months from 1st July to 31st December 2017 + £2,162,168 (50% of total wages for year ended 31st December 2018).
** = £2,162,168 (50% of total wages for year ended 31st December 2018) + £2,853,476 (50% of total wages for year ended 31st December 2019)
*** = Total wages for year ended 31st December 2019

Note: These wages will include the employer’s national insurance contributions of around 13.8%

Some of those figures are scandalous when you see where we are, Murray did very well in my view. Benning being the last one of his signings to go i presume?

Strictly speaking it's Jason law who is left. Being signed for the youth team though. It was a few seasons before Flitcroft gave him his debut and a few more before Clough gave him his league debut.

Murray did ok but it still was not good enough, although he obviously had much less to spend in comparison to Evans and Flitcroft.

He did more than ok. He brought in some very good players on a modest budget. I hope he becomes our manager again one day.

Sorry but i hope we dont appoint adam again.
He was a good player for us over 3 spells.
But as a manager, sorry but he was way out of his depth.
Maybe better staying as a no2.
Look foward not back .

He made some good signings, but on the pitch we were really poor under Murray. Let's not forget that.

Glad he's enjoying his current role but personally I wouldn't have him back as a manager.

Didn't he cry in our dressing room when Derby got relegated? He might be their next manager if they go down.
Fantastic player for us and too early for management just like Dempster.

Im sorry but moving from a coach [ Head Coach] to a manager is a total different job, football is littered with coaches who have failed.
Murray does not even desire to swap roles, shucks i thought Mansfield had tried that route resulting in failure.
Adam Murray has worked with Clough, and in his words we have a Diamond, why after six months should the club be looking at Managers we would like to have.
A club looking to move to the next level after Clough in 2013 were Derby after 9 managers [ Head Coaches ] spending est £200 million and are losing £2 million a month in 2019 tomorrow they could be in league 1, Some high profile names McClaren. Pearson, Rowett, Lampard, Rooney all with cash to spend,
Would they be in this mess under Clough, he did better with 4 Million Than these merry go round managers with over £200 million, and he started with a club in turmoil.
Remember Mansfield will be better for his time there, and no club improves without a long term plan, [ patience the in word ]

He was given peanuts when compared with SE. At least his heart was in the job unlike his successor.
I think we've got the right balance now with NC.
