Acccording to reports David Sharpe will play a big part in deciding the new Manager at MTFC and I thought it would be worth checking out his football credentials

Sharpe was appointed as chairman after his grandfather's resignation in March 2015. At the age of 23, he became one of the world's youngest football bosses. Sharpe's appointment came with shock and scepticism from both fans and the media as the youngest chairman in English football.

Sharpe’s first major decision was to sack Malky Mackay on Easter Monday after a 2-0 home defeat to Derby County. With 5 games remaining till the end of the season Sharpe appointed former club captain Gary Caldwell, however Wigan Athletic fell short and were relegated to League One.

The 2015/2016 season, Sharpe and Caldwell’s first full season, saw the club winning League One and being promoted to the Championship.

In the championship season 2016/ 2017 and after a run of 14 games with only 2 victories Sharpe made the bold decision to sack Gary Caldwell. Sharpe appointed Warren Joyce from Manchester United who came highly recommended from well-known names such as Sir Alex Ferguson, Joyce had previously turned down manager roles at Burnley and Blackburn. However, results didn't bring the change that the appointment of a new manager had expected. In March 2017, Joyce was sacked. The club was now in a relegation battle and Graham Barrow took over as caretaker manager.

After relegation was confirmed Sharpe made the decision to approach Portsmouth for their manager Paul Cook. Cook was appointed in June 2017. the following year it was announced that the Whelan family had agreed a deal to sell the club, stadium and training facilities to the Hong Kong-based International Entertainment Corporation (IEC) in a £22m deal. On 2 November 2018 IEC received shareholder approval to complete the acquisition of the football club, bringing to an end the 23 years of Whelan family ownership. In a letter to the fans chairman David Sharpe confirmed that he along with Matthew Sharpe and non-executive director Garry Cook would resign from the board upon completion of the ownership transition.

I am not sure whether David has any football experience himself but seems to have a similar record to the Radfords in the hiring and firing of Managers

Sharpe's football knowledge comes from of a lifetime of being around people who have run clubs and then running one himself. He would have been watching his granddad since he was little.

If he appoints Gary Caldwell he clearly has no credentials.

That would be a total-flipping-disaster.

Read the room.

No to Caldwell.

Remember this is the same David Sharpe who sold two of our best players and released others. The same David Sharpe who worked with GC to bring in the current untalented players. The same David Sharpe who took Wigan from the Championship to League One.

In this man we put our trust

He sold CJ & Rose because they refused to sign a contract extension and we got good money for players who could leave on a free.

To be fair we have a director who wanted rid of Cox before he got us promotion after finishing 3rd the season before. The same director wanted rid of Flitcroft because he wouldn't play youth teamers who weren't up to it.

I've got an idea let's ask Hymas who we shouldn't hire out of the list and then hire him

Where's the thread questioning his credentials?

I'm not saying I want Hymas to stand down or resign or anything just pointing out not everyone one the board is perfect.

I appreciate they wouldn’t sign again but I did think at the time it may be a false economy.

Obviously we don’t know the size of the fees but I can’t see them being massive. If rumours are true we paid £5,000 per week to loan Tyler Walker for a season. If that’s 35 weeks (about) it works out at £175,000 and we have no residual value in the player. Had we kept them both until January, I doubt their value would decrease tremendously as everyone wants good forwards in January. That means we would have two known quantities who have both played well under GC’s system and would probably have obtained better results for us. If we were doing well they may have stayed, if not we wouldn’t lose a lot either. We’ve had to recruit players for those positions anyway and I doubt there would be massive differences in wages.

So as I say, I can’t see the wisdom of the rush to get them out the door.
