Leyton Orient: Club confirms 'players' have coronavirus

Postby Son Of Sherwood » Mon Sep 21, 2020 1:00 pm

Source: BBC Sport https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/54237123

Leyton Orient have confirmed that "a number" of first team players have tested positive for coronavirus.

The club said in a statement that the tests were carried out after Saturday's 2-2 draw with Mansfield in League Two.

The O's have been in touch with Mansfield, Plymouth and Oldham - their three most recent opponents.

They are due to host Premier League Tottenham in the EFL Cup on Tuesday and say an announcement on that match will be made "shortly".

Should the game need to be postponed then it could cause problems for Spurs, who were due to play against Orient on Tuesday before travelling to Macedonia to face Shkendija in the Europa League on Thursday.

Orient's tie with Jose Mourinho's men would have seen them potentially come up against striker Harry Kane who paid to promote charities on the front of their shirts in May. The England captain made his professional debut during a loan spell with the O's when he was 17.

"Leyton Orient's priority is the health and wellbeing of its players and staff. Those who have tested positive will now strictly follow government self-isolation guidelines," the O's said.

"The Breyer Group Stadium and training ground facilities will be closed until further notice."

Ross Embleton's side are unbeaten in their five matches in all competitions so far this season.

Plymouth - who were beaten by Orient in the previous round of the EFL Cup - say they will do a "precautionary round" of tests before their League One game with Shrewsbury on Saturday, adding that none of their players or football staff currently have symptoms.

All the Orient players were tested after the game, around 30 yards away from where the post match Graham Coughlan interviews took place.

Martin, are you and other press staff routinely tested as part of the new normal?

I would assume our entire set up that went down to Orient will now have to isolate for 10 days.

Don’t folk who’ve come into contact with those who’ve had covid then have to isolate as well?

Guessing we’d be tested now (if not already) but would half expect Saturday to be off

Surely tests should be done before the games, not after?

edit I think I read somewhere that each club's players are tested once per week. So after Saturday's game was in time for their Tuesday game.

Why? You could catch it before the results come in.

Well done to our players for realising Orient had Covid-19 on Saturday, and social distancing from them for the final ten minutes of the match.

Well, technically they are before the game. If we test today, it's before our game on Saturday.

Does that mean, I think it does, that everyone who was involved in Saturdays game has to self isolate for two weeks?

I think the protocol is different where players are being tested regularly.

The close contact rule is within 2 metres for more than 15 minutes.

I am sure I read a paper from F.A. that says playing 90 minutes of football would not breach the close contact rule with opposition teams.

This was going to happen and probably will do a few times this season for Mansfield alone.
