RIP - Jack Charlton

Postby I am Spartacus » Sat Jul 11, 2020 8:16 am

It is with sadness that today, World Cup winner and Leeds stalwart, Jack Charlton has passed away.

In an age where terms like legend, hero, leader are bandied about on ‘one season Wonders and ‘Carlos Kick-a-ball’ imports this man truly was the definition of a great man and player.

Loved the man in football terms, great leader, player and manager.

I loved his philosophy of 'we'll inflict our style of play on the opposition'. No pandering to the opposition.

RIP Jack.

From his autobiography,

When he was an apprentice- He was waiting to see the manager about his salary for the next season. A senior player came out of the office and whispered to Jack that they had offered him £500 a week during the season and £300 during the close season.Jack went in and they offered him £150 a week during the season and £100 during the close season. Charlton asked how come you offered him more than me and the manager said that’s because he’s a better player than you . Jack replied , not during the close season why can’t I get £300 for not playing ?

I remember going to Hillsborough when he was the Wednesday manager, they were playing Arsenal and he came out the dugout to appeal to the Wednesday fans stood on that massive uncovered terrace they used to have.
The Wednesday fans were pelting the Arsenal goalkeeper(Jennings I think)with snowballs as he prepared to take a goalkick,as soon as Jack got within range a hail of snowballs were heading in his direction(did Agincourt proud)Oh for the days of no H&S where you could enter the ground even if you may take a tumble on the piste.
Old football times were better, come to that any football times were better !

Me and my mate were on holiday with his family in Filey 30 years ago when we saw Jack walking along the beach. We asked if we could have a photo with him and my mate asked him if he’d like to become Stags manager. He politely declined the offer

Big Jack Charlton R.I.P. (85)

England, Ireland, Leeds United, Middlesbrough and Sheffield Wednesday legend. I also used to love his football coaching TV programmes on Saturday mornings.

A great character and personality of the game as well as being a very good centre half and manager. Former Stag, Stuart Boam, was his captain when Middlesbrough won the Second Division title (The Championship) in 1973-1974.

Sadly now, more than half of the 66 squad have passed away

Banks, Wilson, Moore, Charlton, Ball and Peters

Thankfully Cohen, Stiles, B Charlton, Hurst and Hunt are still with us

An all time great.. such a pity the fans of this country can’t pay their respects by the means of a minutes silence until the new season hopefully resumes... R.I.P. Jack Charlton.

He did apologise later in the programme and correct the statement.
