Underrated Stags 11.

Postby lifestags » Fri Apr 03, 2020 9:27 am

So on the back of my previous thread, I thought I would do a underrated stags 11. Now I’m thinking these are players that didn’t quite the attention they deserved when they were here OR players that wasn’t rated here but went on to do well.

David Grof
Steve Cook Ryan Tafazolli Jake Buxton Dan Spence
Louis Briscoe Chris Clements Kyle Nix Sam Clucas
Billy Kee Lee Gregory

Couple of controversial ones in there (clucas) but did we really think he would end up having a premier league career??

Briscoe for me did not get enough credit, even in the promotion campaign when Green was the main man, briscoe played his part and I think would of gone on to do well in the league under the right Manager.

Your thoughts? Have I missed anyone?

Cook was a decent player in a very mediocre team, I wouldn't have predicted him to go on to be a Premier League player myself but fair play to him. I'd be tempted to put Hayden White in there - maybe not underrated per se but we didn't realise quite how important he was 'til he was out injured. Agree on Briscoe, he scored a fair few goals for us as well.

You'll wind a few people up putting Bucko in there ;)

Kyle Nix !! What.
Briscoe could be unplayable on his day ,but another day he couldn’t trap a bag of cement .

Do you mean clucas and not cook.

No, I was talking about Cook. Although the same could apply to Clucas.

The only person who underrated Taffa was me and I took all kinda of stick for it. He was the bees knees according to most.

Briscoe was just inconsistent but not underrated, same with a few others mentioned.

Tom Curtis back in the day did more than people gave credit for.

LeRoy and Mathews both underrated, nobody seems to recognise that LeRoy played in the premier league after being given away by Curly.

Leroy was my personal favourite in that midfield. I do like those midfield players who other midfielders think twice about tangling with.

The pre season game with Middlesbro in the promotion season, Paul Ince was, being Paul Ince dishing it out left & right and bitching to the ref constantly. Ince took the ball off Leroy & left a bit in, as they say, Leroy got up, chased Ince 30 yards and hit him that hard with a tackle, it left Ince in a big heap, the ref played on, and Ince avoid the ball for the rest of the game. For a kid fairly new to the team, to absolutely beast the ex England captain & self appointed 'Guvnor' was delight to behold.

Him and Disley both looked like 16 year olds at the start of that season, but they must have been one of the hardest centre midfield partnerships we've ever had & they were both very good footballers too. IIR Dis scored more goals so perhaps why he got more plaudits.
Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored.

I was a big Stevenson fan. Technically not the best player but scored big goals in the conf and got in the starting 11 just as our form turned which was no coincidence.

Scored a few in the league as well. Think he was about a 1 in 3 man for a number 10 which is not bad especially considering he only went professional when he joined us.

Reggie Lambe another who scored some big goals for us and didn’t as much praise as he probably deserved.

One for the older supporters.

John Matthews 1982-84

We used to get tickets for away games off John and his wife, she attended every game.
A true gentleman and another who glided over the ground but was far too good with vision and speed of thought for the rammel he was playing with

Lowery was much loved, one of my favourite Stags of all time. I don't think he was under-rated to be honest, he was just a great player in a crap side, a bit like John Matthews.

Can't remember his name.. Looked like lennox Lewis and could throw a ball about 2 miles against the wind.. A vital cog in the machine that got us back into the league.
