Guys had a chat with Kevin's wife Sue this afternoon. For those of you unaware Kev has gone downhill rapidly over the last 3-4 weeks and is now in a care home in Kirkby. Was shocked to learn he is only 68.
Keep fighting Legend!

Agree one of our top ever defenders of the golden age of the club.
Wish the family and Kev all the best.

Kevin Bird....came to MT at the start of the 1972/73 season. He made 445 appearances for the club. Scored 63 goals for us. Birdy's last game was in May 1983
Courtesy of Stan Searl.
My image is of him having side way parting long hair as shown in Stan's book (page 127) does take me back.
Fond memories of him as a player and do feel for the family at a difficult time
Indeed a legend...…….

Excuse my ignorance but what is the cause of his sudden decline? And Spiritater is quite correct, Birdie had more desire and passion than any of the current crew. Tremendous player.

Kev was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s several years ago. It is a degenerative brain disease with unclear causes but associated with genetics, head trauma and high blood pressure. Former footballers are more than 3 times more likely to suffer from it.
There was an Alzheimer’s fundraiser match held in May 2017 under Kev’s name.
Kev & Sue continued to attend virtually every home match until a few months ago and was generally good humoured and informative about football past and present, although he had his good days/spells and bad spells.
Best wishes to him and also to Sue who has lovingly cared for him during this difficult time.

Last season, I had the privilege to play in the same walking football team as Kev in a tournament. However we had to send him to play at Centre Forward instead of his natural position in defence because he kept giving away penalties by stepping into the ‘penalty area’.
It was a crying shame that he couldn’t understand the need to keep out the ‘penalty area’.
Those accustomed to privilege may feel that equality is oppression.

Just to add that Sue was so chuffed that Krystian Pearce took time out of his day to call into the Care Home and see Kev. It was one of his "good days" and they sat chatting football for over 1 hour. It made his day.
The Chief has had some stick this year but just goes to show the bloke cares.

Very interesting listen on the Joe Rogan Podcast with a fella called Paul Stammets who researches fungi.
He claims there is groundbreaking research using a certain type of fungi called Lions Mane along with small doses of Magic Mushrooms, can spark the production of new neurones in the brain and potentially lead to a cure as such for Alzheimers.
I really hope it leads that way, it's a terrible condition and really hard to witness.
I wish Birdie and his lovely wife all the best.
