Jimmy Sutton

I don 't support any particular team but I like to travel around to different grounds. I have always had a bit of a soft spot for the Stags and I have watched them many times down the years. I was at Anfield way back in 1970/71 for a cup replay and Mansfield were rather unlucky to lose 3-2 in extra time. A player called Jimmy Sutton scored early in the game and looked good that evening. Just looking up the records he only played a handful of games for the club and then seemed to disappear. I just wonder what became of his - injury problems?

Anyway all the best to the Stags fans.

I too went to that game, and boy were we unlucky!!
I recall Steve Heighway was the difference for them. We went over the pennines in the back of an old van. Cold aand dark, and a long way back after. Extra time and such a disappointing result.
All I can recall about Sutton is that he was always very much a fringe player and on featured that night a a replacement for anothet of our farwards. (sorry but cant remember who. It was a long time Ago)
Not much help I know but thanks for the memory :-)

Jimmy scored after 93 seconds in the kop end. 1-1 at half time. Stags 2-1 up in 65 minute, robbed by a dubious penalty near the end. Alun Evans scored the winner in extra time. A great night,so close. A great memory.

I remember bring directly behind the goal at the Quarry Lane end in the first match and seeing Dudley Roberts rise above everyone to power a header into the net only for if to be disallowed for a push. If that had stood. ....

Jimmy Sutton was released at the end of the 1970-71 season. He joined Morecambe but I don't have any info after that.

We have a section on this website with reports of vintage Stags games, here: https://stagsnet.net/vintage/reports/reports.html

That Liverpool game is here: https://stagsnet.net/vintage/reports/liver2.html
(and here: https://stagsnet.net/vintage/reports/liver1.html)

We also have a section with team photos from each season: https://stagsnet.net/vintage/teampics/teampics.html
Jimmy Sutton is on the 70-71 team photo: https://stagsnet.net/vintage/teampics/7071.htm

I was at the game too and Jimmy's goal was a cracker that hit the stantion and came out as quick as it went in. I couldn't understand why they were all jogging back to the halfway line and then realised we must have scored. In the words of the song "Oh what a night." I remember passing the bus on the way back to Bolton where we were at College after the game and feeling proud at a great performance but sad that they had lost.
