QPR Youth Cup preview

Postby Sweden Stag » Wed Dec 11, 2019 7:51 pm

For the second season running, the Stags’ Youth have in the Youth Cup been drawn against a club with PL experience. Last season, it was away to Bournemouth, where the Stags more than held their own and lost only in the final minute of normal time. This season, after beating sides like Doncaster and Rotherham, our youth were rewarded with a home tie against QPR, whose latest top-flight campaign was the 2014-15 one in which they were relegated straight away. This was also the case in their inaugural one way back in 1968-69 after becoming the first side to go from the current third tier set-up to the highest level within two seasons as QPR became runaway champions of the then third division with 103 goals scored and already by the time of their 7-1 win at Field Mill in September 1966 looked like they were to hit the net left right and centre for the remainder of that campaign.

QPR, who were inaugural members of the old third division (South) were in 1975-76 very close to win the first division, but finished runners-up to Liverpool then. The Hoops also had quite a few good seasons at highest level in the mid-1980’s, were also one of the inaugural members of the Premier League in 1992 as well as they were inaugural ones together with the Stags at current League One level in 1958.

Already in the Stags’ inaugural FL campaign in 1931-32, they faced QPR first time, and both games that season were drawn, a 2-2 at Field Mill on September 26, 1931 and a 1-1 in London on February 6, 1932 (must have been at White City as QPR used this ground between 1931 and 1933). And before 1957-58, the Stags played the London outfit in all of their four seasons in the div 3 (S).

None of the previous FL league games at the Mansfield have been goalless. Biggest win was a 8-1 on March 15, 1965 (shared highest with the 8-1 against Barrow on February 9, 2013), and the biggest defeat a 1-7 (one of three 1-7 home defeats in Stags league history) on September 24, 1966, and after that defeat the writer of these lines thought that QPR would run away with the div 3 Championship with lots of goals, which they eventually did with 103 goals scored and a margin of 12 points to Middlesbrough. Incidentally, the return game in London that season was the only goal-less meeting between the two teams to date. At the Mill, only two games have produced fewer than four goals. In both cases it was Stags victories, a 1-0 on October 12, 1963 and a 2-1 on February 5, 1966. That season also produced the only up to date Stags away win at QPR, and that was a 2-1 early on in the 1965-66 season, on August 28, 1965. And in half of the games at QPR the Stags have been goalless. QPR’s biggest home win was a 3-0 on October 1, 1938.

The sides last met in the FL during the 2002-03 season. And in both games, the Stags were undone by extremely poor refereeing, and the Stagsnet readers need only to read the match reports for that season to see why. At Mansfield, QPR won to a 4-0 scoreline, far too harsh on the Stags as one of the QPR scorers should have been red-carded by the then worst referee that season. The refereeing at Loftus Road in the latest senior meeting the sides was also a farce and ended up with a 0 rating. In that game, one Stags players was sent off within nine minutes after coming on, never to play again, and the Stags were very close to win that game. In injury-time, QPR equalized to 2-2. These games weren’t the only ones in which the Stags were undone by poor officials (enough printed).

And if the games at senior level in Mansfield are something to go by, there could be a few goals on Thursday night. Hope for a good game, but will the Stags go through to another round? Remains to be seen.

Over the years, there has not been much player traffic involving the Stags and QPR and those who have been traced are listed below. Baptiste played for the Hoops as recently as in last season’s Championship campaign.

Played for both sides: Alex John-Baptiste, Ian Baraclough, Oscar Gobern (two League Cup games for QPR), Richard Pacquette.

Jamie Sendles-White was on the QPR books between 2013 and 2015 but didn’t make the first team and played a few games for the Stags in 2014. Giles Coke is another player who didn’t make the QPR first team.
