Grimsby Town part company with manager

Postby Son Of Sherwood » Fri Nov 15, 2019 11:57 am

Source: BBC Sport

Grimsby have parted company with boss Michael Jolley after a run of seven games without a win.

The 42-year-old was appointed manager at Blundell Park in March 2018.

He subsequently led them to safety in the fourth tier before registering a 17th place finish last season.

The Mariners are the third League Two team to change manager in three days, after Carlisle United sacked Steven Pressley on Wednesday and Leyton Orient parted with Carl Fletcher on Thursday.
Endeavoring to persevere since 1965 (8-1 home win against QPR)

Obviously these clubs think that they should be doing better than they are with what's at the manager's disposal.

Grimsby are 1 point behind us but have 2 games in hand over us.

We have played the same as Orient and both on 20 points.

Carlisle are 2 points behind us on the same games played.
You've got to go there and come back, to know where you've been.

Clubs are taking action as they fear they might miss out on managerial targets with so many vacancies now available. I think Derek Adams going to Morecambe has made a lot of teams think, as he would’ve been a good appointment for any league two club.

All 3 will have significantly lower budgets than us too, with not as good a squads, and I would imagine didn’t set automatic promotion as their primary (realistic) target for the season. I do wonder at what point this will translate to the board at our club?

By the time Dempster gets sacked all the good managerial candidates will have been hired by other clubs.

Bearing in mind they’re only 1 point behind us and have played 2 less games than us, Grimsby are having a better season than us (especially when you take into consideration respective budgets and season expectations) and they still sack their manager before us.

Then we’ll just get the old ‘who are we going to bring in to replace him’ argument

Interestingly, Jolley has posted his own statement saying that the clubs objectives for this season are to get their highest league finish since 05/06....14th.

Even more strange is we sacked a guy who finished in our highest league 2 finish since 01/02. Beggars belief.

With a budget which would rival every league one club apart from the top third never mind the biggest budget in league two.

Said budget with expensive flops that Evans signed. Top 3 budget. Finished 4th with Anderson, Mirfin and Diamond taking up some of said budget. I wonder how big the budget would be taking out their wages.

There's much been said about how high their wages actually were but I highly doubt they played for free.....

I meant take out budget, subtract their wages and then see how the budget stacks up against the rest of the league.

We have the same budget this season apparently, and look where we are.

Budgets don't guarantee success.

You only have to look at Accrington who had some players on £250 a week when they went up from League Two.
