Objectives

Postby Showaddywaddy » Sat Sep 14, 2019 5:36 pm

What are or were this season’s objectives for John Dempster?

Was it categorically set out as promotion?

Was it to ensure more game time and development of our younger players?

It’s still very early but we are obviously way short of the standards set for promotion and our own youngsters seem to have dropped further down the pecking order with the arrival young players from West Ham and Leeds Utd together with Gibbens being sent out on loan again.

The most worrying aspect of this season so far is the negative tactics and long ball football employed by the manager. At the best of times your job security in football management can swing on the back of a couple of dodgy results but when your chosen brand of football is so unappealing on the eye you are likely to accelerate your own demise. As the final whistle blew at the end of the Scunthorpe victory last weekend I felt so underwhelmed (the kind of underwhelmed I felt towards the end of the Cox era).

If John Dempster wants to turn around his current popularity and reduce the risk of becoming the latest name of football managers looking for work I would suggest he has to drop his ‘cautious/plain boring’ football philosophy now and roll the dice. In my experience supporters are far more forgiving when they see their team play attacking, front foot football.

If our current crop of emerging youngsters are good enough they should be entrusted a shirt, instead of paying the wages to aid the development of players from clubs higher up the food chain. Lawrence, Leroy, Dis and Hassell were all blooded before the promotion season.

Personally I’d be happy to write this season off if it could be used to get the the youth team players filtered through but only if the style of football was something worth building on.

Playing without fear is of paramount importance and as it allows me to be nostalgic that’s exactly what the 2001/2002 side did, our youngsters basically terrified the rest of the division.

The alternative is to and get Parkinson and Parkin now before they are snapped up.

Definitely promotion. Nothing else will suffice and he knows it.

I remember a video in the summer where Glover says something along the lines of 'Me and John know that if we don't get promoted we won't be here next year'

The owner and the board have lost their vision, don't have a strategy and dont have a plan.

They panic sacked Flitcroft now they are where they are; On a sinking ship.

I agree. I think sacking Flitcroft was a knee-jerk. Worse, in my opinion, was the instantaneous JD appointment.

Perhaps, the Radfords had to act quickly as the engine was running on their tax exile sabbatical?

Going from managing a youth team to the full first team is chalk and cheese.

They’ve never had a strategy. That’s the problem.

I think they did. It was to hire experienced and previously successful managers and back them in the transfer market. As we did with Evans and Flitcroft.

We've now totally gone against that. We're floundering and it will take real leadership for Jr and Cr to rescue this season.

Your infatuation with DF to the point of constantly slagging off the Radfords because they dared to sack your beloved manager is quite frankly freakish.

How long will JR give JD? It’s easy for us all to speculate but it’s his money. As a supporter I’m not overly worried yet, but if I was the owner ploughing cash into it, I’d be seriously thinking at what point I need to make a change.

There's a ridiculous amount of panic amongst Stags fans at the moment. Get some perspective.

18pts from first 12 games is the minimum requirement.

So he has to win three from next four or he will be on thin ice.

So you too advocate sacking a manager after 12 games?

I sort of give up now.

No, It was something I heard after taking to a sponsor who had been talking to a director. If he wasn't in or around play offs after 12 games.

It’s more the fact of can we see anything changing in the next 12 games rather than looking back on points in the last 12. Has there been any glimmer of hope/signs that we’re progressing? Are we starting to get an identity and have a set way we want to play for the remainder of the season so that we can be successful? Answers are no and no. Therefore, why waste time, why waste another season.

I would have sacked him after 6 games. The direction of travel was clear, the trajectory is still downward.

Need to nip this mistake in the bud before irreparable damage is done.
