Stags v Morecambe cup game preview

Postby Sweden Stag » Mon Aug 12, 2019 9:47 am

Following the extraordinary 2-2 draw last Saturday, the first-ever one between the sides in League Two fixtures, the Stags now face Morecambe in a cup game for the very first time. Once again, at One Call Stadium.

Before the 2007-08 season, had the Stags never met Morecambe in any competition.

In the FA Cup as a League Two club, the Shrimps have yet to reach the third round, an appalling record, and only on a few occasions got as far as the second round. Twice, Morecambe have been kayoed against sides outside the FL, Dover in 2014 and FC Halifax Town last season at The Shay in a first-round replay.

When being outside the EFL, the Shrimps reached the third round of the FA Cup on three occasions. The first one was way back in 1961-62 after beating Chester away in the second round. In the third round, Morecambe were drawn at home to another non-league side, Weymouth. In front of a record crowd, over 9000, at Christie Park, the South Coast side went through by the only goal of the game and were rewarded with a good fourth round tie at Preston, losing only 3-1. Little did Morecambe and Weymouth know then, that the sides were to face each other chasing conference points some 44 years later! During the 21st century, Morecambe reached the third round twice and on both occasions were drawn against Ipswich, at home in 2000-01 when Ipswich played in the PL, and at Portman Road two seasons later.

In the League Cup, Morecambe had their best moments in their very first EFL season when reaching the third round after disposing of two then famous Championship sides. First Preston at Deepdale to a 2-1 scoreline, then a few weeks later Wolverhampton at Molineux after extra-time! The Morecambe terminus was at Sheffield United, who ran out clear-cut 5-0 winners at Bramall Lane. An ex-Stag, Dave Artell, starred for Morecambe during the famous KO of Wolverhampton.

Last season, Morecambe were eliminated at Preston in the first round of the EFL Cup while the Stags, who dumped out Leeds in 1994 as well as Coventry and Wolves way back in 1975, routed Accrington to a 6-1 scoreline at home before more than holding their own at West Bromwich, only to be beaten 2-1 very late on The Hawthorns.

Expect a few changes to the line-ups of both sides on Tuesday night compared to the ones both sides fielded last Saturday.

Come on Mansfield!
