I think someone needs to tell BBC

Look at this tosh they have just published

The second oldest ground currently in use in the Football League - only Deepdale was built earlier - and standing proudly in the centre of Newport since 1877, the ground was first owned by Newport Athletic Club who used it primarily for cricket, tennis, bowls, rugby and athletics.

They've taken it from Wikipedia which states deepdale is the oldest stadium as I read roughly those comments last week and it caught my eye.

It states the following "Deepdale is "widely recognised as being the oldest 'continuously used' football stadium in the world. But like most coveted historic accolades, it is fiercely contested"."

Stadium not ground, but BBC have half heartedly researched it.

Fake news.

Oldest ground in the league claim - anoraks step forward

Postby adamstag » Fri Feb 15, 2019 12:27 pm

Regarding being the "oldest professional league ground in the world" I was interested in a piece by Michael Pearlman - https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/47196227

Within that - "The second oldest ground currently in use in the Football League - only Deepdale was built earlier - and standing proudly in the centre of Newport since 1877, the ground was first owned by Newport Athletic Club who used it primarily for cricket, tennis, bowls, rugby and athletics."

So who's right and who's wrong - and why would there be a deviation in stories?

Is the distinction that ours is the oldest professional football ground in the world, whilst Rodney Parade (and Deepdale) is a ground that was primarily for other sports first before football? Certainly Newport only moved there in the last 20 years or so.

Edit: Deepdale was leased in 1875, so 14 or so years after football was played at Field Mill. So regardless, they're both wrong. They also denoted 'continuously used' football stadium

Deepdale was first used for football in 1878.

Field Mill was first used for football in 1861.

Someone needs to tell the BBC to get some new researchers.

It's a valid shout though.

Seems ours and bramall lane are closest ours was 1861, their first game was 1862 but built 1855 on Google assume the gap is cricket?

Valid shout comment was regarding your original post btw. Seems the water is very muddy and no body has a clue as each website has a different answer.

Looked at a daily express article that had us 1st and Rodney parade second for continuous use. Sheff United was down in 10th.......may have been because Wednesday used it originally but doesn't answer the ground argument.

I read an article in the Leicester Mercury that mentions Field Mill being used for cricket as early
as 1840

Ok Martin with the exception of your good self very view people on the internet have a clue what is correct.

Even saw a comment from a wendy fan saying that we could be sued because of the sign above the quarry lane stand.

There are alot of uneducated people who still think its the Sheffield based club or PNE.

We don't mention our history regarding the ground as much as we should, in my opinion . hence why no one else knows about it
