A side can play well but be 2-0 down due to one mistake and one clinical finish (fine margins). That is when the underlying data comes in useful because it helps to spot trends. The xG table showed that the Stags were and still are under achieving (-7 points) based on creating goal scoring opportunities and our recent results have backed that up. We are now in the xG play offs by the way just behind Walsall and Morecambe

Possession: 40:60% xG: 1.6 v 1.1
Grimsby had 60% possession (although this wasn't expected on the pre match XG so it must be fake news) but it was a poor performance from them with no creativity in midfield and no threat up front. Paul Hurst was so frustrated that he subbed three midfield players at half time (Danny Preston, Elliott Hewitt and Max Wright.) It was not really a 3-0 game as the xG stats show (which proves these XG stats are bull, but I'll drone on about them anyway) and the final result did flatter Scunthorpe (so Grimsby should get one of the points, because bull XG says so). The difference between the two sides was Abo Eisa who won and rocketed in a free kick from the edge of the area (XG says this was a poor chance so the score should only be 2-0). He then used his pace to run in behind Matty Pollock to score the third goal. (Eisa was not expected to score this chance either, despite being a good striker who is in form because some FIFA 98 nerd says so, so the score should now read only 1-0) Eisa may well have been offside when he ran through and scored.(So with two of Scunthorpe's goals ruled out and the Codhead's XG added the game really finished 1-1)
The second goal came when Matty Pollock allowed Ryan Loft to get in front of him from a free kick. The ball fell to the floor and Ryan Loft poked it towards goal. It may have hit James McKeown sliding out of his goal in the six yard area and then rebounded off Rollin Menayese before creeping over the line. Ryan Loft had a good game up front alongside Eisa.
Rollin Menayese was no better or no worse than the rest of the Grimsby team yesterday. He looked like the new bloke at work who is not sure what he is supposed to be doing. He certainly had a better game than Matty Pollock who was to blame for the second and third goals The only players who showed some glimmers of match changing talent were Jay Matete (on loan from Fleetwood) and George Williams when he came on as a sub at half time. However it was Matete who went into the back of Abo Eisa on the edge of the area. It was arguably a penalty. Matt Green had a good chance in the first half where he ran on to a great through ball from Danny Preston. The Greeny of old would have been straight through on goal and fired a shot in but he allowed Manny Onariase to recover and make a crucial last ditch tackle.
Rollin won all his headers and on the whoscored stats won 4 aerials which was the second highest for both sides. George Taft won 5. He only had a 60% pass success rate mainly because he was hitting a lot of balls down the line or channels when he was in the right back position near the touchline. He made one mistake in the first half where he missed a tackle on Alfie Beestin in the centre which allowed Beestin to play in Devarn Green on goal but James McKeown saved Green's shot.
Scunthorpe MOM: Abo Eisa and Ryan Loft
Grimsby MOM: Jay Matete and George Williams

I've edited the heading and first paragraph for you Darren.

bull.
We are minus those 7 points because under Coughlan we were crap.
Crap formation.
Crap game plan.
Crap man management.
Crap team spirit.
Crap coaching.
Crap defending.
Crap creativity.
Crap finishing.
We've picked up points recently because under Clough we are good.
Good formation.
Good game plan.
Good man management.
Good team spirit.
Good coaching.
Good defending.
Good creativity.
Good finishing.
Crap manager very few points.
Good manager more points.
It really is that simple.

Completely agree
Martin Shaw wrote:HT Exeter 0-1 Morecambe. Morecambe deservedly ahead through a penalty from Adam Phillips. Phillips (on loan from Burnley) has impressed, as he has every time I've seen him. Exeter look toothless and dodgy at the back too.

All draws for me so that no one gains 3 points on us.
Exeter now 2 down. Their current form is as bad as Cheltenham's. Room for the also rans Inc us to catch up.MTFCMusings wrote:Martin Shaw wrote:HT Exeter 0-1 Morecambe. Exeter are the current highest scorers in English football. Trust them to pick the night they’re on my both teams to score coupon to look toothless!
