Lincoln Checkatrade Trophy away preview

Postby Sweden Stag » Mon Sep 03, 2018 10:35 am

For the second season running, the Stags face Lincoln City in the Checkatrade EFL Trophy. Last season, the Imps won at One Call Stadium to a 3-1 scoreline on their way to lifting the trophy later on. Despite the initial defeat against the Imps, the Stags went through by beating Notts County and Everton U 23 respectively before going out on penalties at Blackpool. The other sides in the Stags’ group this campaign are Scunthorpe United and Wolverhampton U 23, who face each other on the same night as the Lincoln v Stags fixture.

The Stags and the Imps have faced each other in FA Cup campaigns over the years.

Last time out, it was a 2nd round FA Cup replay for the right to play Liverpool at home in the third round. Then, the Stags went through at home to play the Reds on January 6, 2013. From then on, the Stags went on to seal a League Two return after five seasons.

Last season, it was Lincoln’s turn to grab the FA Cup headlines, being the first club outside the League for decades to reach the Quarters-finals. On the way, the Imps kayoed eternal giant killers Altrincham, then Oldham Ipswich (in a replay), Brighton, PL side Burnley away to a 1-0 score-line before bowing out away to Arsenal.

The Imps then went on to seal a League Two return after six seasons outside the FL

The FA Cup replay in 2012 came about thanks to an injury-time strike by Matt Rhead, now at Linoln in a real cracker of a cup fight big style with six goals and loads of chances for either side to win. And that was the first FA Cup game between the sides to go to a replay.

Before that, both sides needed replays and extra-time (and more than that) to reach the second round.

While the Stags needed penalties to dump a very strong Slough side out of the cup, the Imps did not need that lottery. In extra time, Lincoln did enough to dump the Saddlers from Walsall out of the competition, the Saddlers with David Grof in goal, the same Grof who drove the Luton forwards mad in the FA Trophy semifinals between the Stags and the Hatters in March 2011.

During the clubs' league years, the Stags were dumped out by the Imps of the League Cup as well as out of the FA Cup - and vice versa. For results, see below.

On three occasions, all in December 2nd round ties at Field Mill spanning over 50 years, the clubs have faced each other in the FA Cup with the Stags going through on two occasions and Lincoln on one.

The second of the Field Mill FA Cup games between the sides, which took place 25 years prior to the one in December 2012, was a real cracker. Lincoln, then being the first side to be relegated from the FL, had beaten Crewe at home in the first round before travelling the short way to Mansfield. On December 5, 1987, 5671 (in FL games only bettered by the visit of Sunderland on April 26, 1988) watched the Stags progress to a 4-3 scoreline thanks to goals from Kent, Cassells, Lovery and Foster. The Stags then reached the fourth round, only to be unluckily beaten at home to the eventual winners Wimbledon in front of 10462 on January 30, 1988.

But the Stags' best-ever FA Cup run was, of course, in 1968-69 when the quarter-finals were reached after dumping West Ham out in the fifth round on February 26, 1969.

In recent history before 2017, Lincoln's best FA Cup run came in 1975-76, incidentally after beating the Stags at Field Mill 2-1 on December 13, 1975, where 8466 saw McDonald hit the net for the Stags. Lincoln then went on to beat the old Aldershot club 2-1 at their place before bowing out in style, losing only 2-3 away at the side which kayoed the Stags in the League Cup last Tuesday night, West Bromwich Albion, in the fourth round.

In the League Cup, the sides have been drawn against each other on four occasions. Only once did the Stags go through, but that was in the 1972-73 season. The 3-2 win at Field Mill on August 16, 1972, saw Sandy Pate on the Stags' score-sheet for the first time ever! But Pate had to wait until Easter Monday, 1976, for his first Stags league goal, and this happened in a Division Three 3-0 home victory over Sheffield Wednesday on April 19, 1976.

The sides have also on several occasions faced each other in league games and have had loads of players appearing for both sides, also having had managers bossing both clubs. To name one player: Alan Marriott. To name one player, later being manager: The late Keith Alexander.

Remains to be seen how many changes both sides will make compared to their latest League Two fixtures, both won: the Stags 1-0 at home to Carlisle, Lincoln 3-0 at Exeter. Come on Mansfield!
