Lennie Lawrence was full of admiration for struggling Mansfield after his Cardiff side battled to a 1-0 win over the Stags at Ninian Park.

Welsh international Robert Earnshaw grabbed his 34th goal of the season midway through the second half to see of a spirited effort from Keith Curle's struggling team.

Lawrence said: "Although we deserved to win the game probably by at least 2-0, Mansfield were very bold and by playing with wide men they made the pitch seem bigger and we took a little time organising ourselves."

Cardiff City boss Lennie Lawrence was delighted with his side's 1-0 win over Mansfield Town at Ninian Park, but also praised the beaten Stags.

Rob Earnshaw settled the game with his record-equalling 30th league goal of the season and afterwards Lawrence was happy with the outcome.

He said: "We deserved to win and closed the game down well towards the end and 2-0 would have been a fairer reflection.

"All credit to Mansfield as they were very bold and made the pitch seem bigger with two widemen. They deserve to stay up as they are a very young side and never gave up.

We should have made more use of the space we created, but the fans were great once again and they seem to understand what we are trying to do on the pitch.

"We now have 73 points and I think we will need at least 85 and possibly 90 to make sure of automatic promotion."
