CLOUGH, BOWERY AND DARYL McMAHON REACTION

‘Wonderful’ to win late on - manager
mansfieldtown.net, Sunday 29th November 2020

Boss Nigel Clough has praised the Stags for ‘going right until the death,’ as his side booked their place in the Emirates FA Cup Third Round by way of a 122nd minute Nicky Maynard winner.

Dagenham & Redbridge were the visitors to One Call Stadium, and took the lead on 19 minutes through Paul McCallum.

Mansfield equalised moments later via a well-taken Harry Charsley goal, and had to wait almost 100 minutes for their eventual winning effort.

The manager says he hopes Sunday’s dramatic win generates confidence amongst the Stags’ ranks.

“I thought we deserved it [win],” he told iFollow Stags. “The fact that it’s the 120th minute is largely irrelevant because I thought our general play from the second-half onwards was good.

“We created enough chances to win two or three games today. The fact that we didn’t score until the 120th minute, that’s the frustrating thing.

“We just need one of the strikers to start putting them away, and Nicky Maynard probably remains the most composed finisher we’ve got with his experience.

“People think that was an easy chance at the end, but when it’s bobbling and it’s spinning, and it’s the last kick of the game, then it’s a difficult finish.

“It doesn’t matter how you win sometimes, it’s just wonderful to win the match.

“We’d had so many opportunities, and that’s why we brought Aidan Stone on as we think it’s going to penalties. The reason we swapped Aidan for Marek [Stech] is because he’s a better penalty saver when we've been practising them.

“We played with a purpose to create chances and we did that all throughout the game today.

“It’s important that the lads kept going right until the death, whether you’re drawing or winning, just keep going right until the death.

“I hope, confidence-wise, that will do us good. We’ve had a couple of wins in the last few games and when you’ve not won for six to eight months, every win is a big one.”

On today’s opposition, the manager added: “We knew exactly what Dagenham were going to do and we know from our experience how tough the Conference is.

“They had a great chance on 90 minutes where their lad [Luke Croll] headed one over. I thought they were a very good outfit.”

The boss also says he wants one of the big teams in Round Three, as Premier League and Championship outfits are added to the mix in Monday night’s cup draw.

“I haven’t thought about that [who we want in the next round]. We don’t mind. You always want somebody to make money, so one of the big boys away, or you want one of the big boys down here.

“But with no fans or crowds coming in, it changes perspective a little bit.

“It’s just nice to get through and to win another game. We want to use it now as a spur and an incentive to push on in the league.”

There was also an injury update on defender James Perch, who was absent today, and winger Stephen McLaughlin, who went off injured in the second-half of this afternoon’s contest.

“[Perch has a] strained hamstring. He managed to complete the 90 minutes against Harrogate but was pretty sore afterwards.

“He got through that game, but we’ll just have to see how he is day-to-day.

“Stephen [McLaughlin] got a nasty whack on his ankle right in front of us in the technical area. It doesn’t look too good, so hopefully there’s no damage.

“It’s pretty sore for him to walk on at the moment so once again, we’ll see how he is towards Wednesday.”

Nigel Clough delivers his verdict as Mansfield Town scrape past Dagenham and Redbridge in FA Cup
chad.co.uk, Sunday 29th November 2020

Nigel Clough wants his players to use Mansfield Town’s dramatic FA Cup win over Dagenham and Redbridge as a springboard.

Stags squeezed past the National League side 2-1 after Nicky Maynard scored in extra-time stoppage time.

Mansfield had fallen behind to Paul McCallum’s 19th minute goal.

But Harry Charsley drew the hosts level six minutes later, before Maynard, who had only been on the pitch for seven minutes, popped up in the 122 minute to slot home from close range.

“We want to use the win as the spur and incentive to kick on in the league,” said Clough.

“When we reflect on the performance, that is the most we have controlled the game and the most we have played with a purpose to create chances.

“You just want people to keep going and Jordan Bowery is a perfect example. He is not having the best of time in front of goal but he kept going and it was his shot that created the rebound for Nicky to tap in.

“It’s important that the lads keep going right to the death and I hope it will do us good confidence wise.

“Sometimes it doesn’t matter how you win, it is just important to win. Every win is a big win.”

Clough also praised the Londoners for taking Mansfield the distance, but felt Stags fully deserved their place in the third round draw.

“We deserved to win it, the fact we scored in the 122nd minute is largely irrelevant,” he added.

“Our general play was very good and we created enough chances to win two or three games. It is frustrating we didnt take our chances sooner.

“Dagehnam made it very hard. We knew what they would do and we know how tough Conference teams are and I thought they were a very good outfit.

“They had a great chance on 90 minutes and the lad headed it over, you need those little breaks to get through.

“We don't mind who we get in the next round, We either want a big boy away to make money or one down here, but with no crowds it changes the perspective.”

Striker commends comeback win
mansfieldtown.net, Sunday 29th November 2020

Striker Jordan Bowery commended Mansfield Town’s response to an early setback in their 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Dagenham & Redbridge at One Call Stadium.

Forward Paul McCallum found a 19th-minute breakthrough with a clinical finish that left the Stags needing to strike twice without reply to book their spot in the Third Round of the Emirates FA Cup.

Harry Charsley netted a calm equaliser just six minutes later and, with the scores level until the dying seconds, substitute Nicky Maynard climbed off the bench to secure his side’s progression at the death.

Subsequently, Bowery felt Mansfield’s response to falling behind warranted the result earned in Nottinghamshire.

“The first-half felt like it was 100 miles per hour,” he told iFollow Stags. “It was from their end to our end and it was tough but full credit to them [Dagenham] because they came and worked hard.

https://www.mansfieldtown.net/news/2020/november/jordan-bowery-post-dagenham--redbridge/

“They tested us at the start getting the goal but we responded well. We can’t live in disappointment like maybe we did weeks ago, but it’s positive that we dug in and got the win [in the] last minute.

“We had a lot of chances but that’s also another positive because we’re creating them chances, we just need to put them away.

“We got the win in the end so that’s all that matters.”

The 29-year-old labelled himself a confidence player and believes his new-found form boils down to boss Nigel Clough instilling confidence into the Stags’ squad.

“The gaffer has come in - and fair play to Coops and his staff too - they’ve just given confidence to the lads.

“I feel as though I’m a confidence player and they’ve just put belief in me. I’m thankful for the gaffer for doing that, since he’s been here I’ve played every minute and he’s shown faith in me.

“I feel a lot more confident now and I think it shows with the rest of the lads. I feel like we’ve been a lot better since the gaffer’s come in; hopefully with this win we can kick on with the season.”

And the former MK Dons frontman believes the next round of the competition provides a platform for everyone associated with the club to showcase their talents.

“Everyone wants to get through to the third round with all the big teams coming in,” he continued.

“It’s a good chance to showcase your talent, especially with the better teams, it’s just a bit disappointing there won’t be any fans to support us and do something for them because it would be a great day out for them.

“[Manchester] United would be my ideal draw - at Old Trafford - but we don’t know how that would go.

“It’s a good day out so I’d take anyone. We’ll take it game by game but United would be the one for me.”

Jordan Bowery hails Nigel Clough for helping him find his confidence - and dreams of Manchester United in next round of FA Cup
chad.co.uk, Sunday 29th November 2020

Striker Jordan Bowery has hailed the role of Nigel Clough in helping him find his confidence.

The former MK Dons man has had a tough start to life in a Mansfield Town shirt but played the full game of the FA Cup win over Dagenham.

And he now feels he is starting to believe in himself once again.

"The gaffer has come in - and fair play to Coops and his staff too - they’ve just given confidence to the lads,” he told the IFollow Stags.

Dagenham boss Daryl McMahon:

"I'm very proud we put on a terrific performance.
"It's the worst time to concede a goal when there is no time left for us to react to it.
"Today wasn't the easiest day getting here. The bus doors would not close so we all had to drive up here in our cars which is not great preparation.
"But these things happen. The players' and staff's reaction was top class.
