MAYNARD GOAL IN EXTRA-TIME STOPPAGE TIME SENDS STAGS INTO ROUND 3 OF THE FA CUP

Martin Shaw at the One Call Stadium, Field Mill

Mansfield Town are through to the third round of the FA Cup thanks to a goal from substitute Nicky Maynard with the penultimate kick of the game in extra-time against National League Dagenham & Redbridge this afternoon. Just when it looked like the game would be going to a penalty shoot-out, Maynard turned the loose ball into the net from close range after Jordan Bowery’s shot was saved.
The Stags had 26 shots, 11 on target during the 120 minutes compared to 8 for Dagenham, 5 on target, but it looked like a penalty shoot-out would be needed to separate the sides until Maynard’s goal. The Stags have not won a penalty shoot-out since knocking out Slough Town in the FA Cup in 2012 on the way to facing Liverpool, so it was just as well the last gasp winner came!
Dagenham took the lead after 19 minutes. The lively Miles Weston, who gave Mal Benning a difficult first half down the right wing, threaded a great ball forward for Paul McCallum to run onto in the area and McCallum fired a fantastic shot across Marek Stech and into the left corner of the net from a tight angle on the right.
The Stags were level after 25 minutes. Great play from Jordan Bowery muscling his way past Abu Ogogo and into the area on the left before sliding a perfect ball across the edge of the area to Harry Charsley, who side-footed past the keeper from 16 yards. Charsley’s 4th goal of the season and it had similarities to his goal at Forest Green.
The Stags were nearly ahead after 33 minutes. Bowery again slid a good ball across the edge of the area to Ollie Clarke. Clarke switched the ball from his left foot to his right foot and curled a great shot towards the top right corner of the net but the keeper made a super save tipping it over the bar.
A fair scoreline of 1-1 at half-time with Dagenham looking much better than a team near the foot of the National League.
The Stags hit the post after 68 minutes as Kellan Gordon found Andy Cook and Cook teed up Clarke for a shot from the edge of the area which was deflected by centre-half Will Wright onto the outside of the right post with the keeper motionless.
Substitute Jamie Reid went close after 81 minutes when his shot brought a good save from the keeper after more good set-up play by Bowery. Three minutes later, another good chance for Reid as Gordon found him with a fine low cross and Reid took his shot first time but it was straight at the keeper.
The Stags nearly gifted Dagenham a winner after 90+3 minutes as Benning conceded an unnecessary free kick, and from the free kick from the right taken by Sam Deering, centre half Luke Croll headed just over the bar. There would have been no coming back from that.
Into extra-time, and the Stags had a goal disallowed after 98 minutes as Clarke did well to cut along the edge of the area to find space to shoot and his left-footed effort deflected past the stranded keeper into the net off Reid. Reid was a fraction offside as shown by the video replay. The flag went up extremely late though after the Stags players had started to celebrate.
A moment of individual brilliance nearly put the Stags ahead after 108 minutes as Charsley crossed from the right and Reid launched an overhead kick towards the roof of the net but the keeper tipped it over. What an effort from Jamie Reid. Shades of Danny Rose scoring in this competition three years ago at Shaw Lane.
The Stags brought on keeper Aidan Stone to replace Stech for the penalty shoot-out in the final minute. Stone’s only touch of the ball was to launch it straight down the middle, Bowery headed on, it was headed away by Ogogo, Clarke headed it forward to Reid, back to goal. Reid turned away from Ogogo and slid a super ball forward for Bowery to run on to in the area. Bowery’s left footed shot was half-saved by the keeper, left back Johnson tried to clear, but it fell for Maynard who swivelled and turned an awkwardly bouncing ball into the net from 6 yards. The clock read 120 minutes and 59 seconds, with one second of stoppage time in extra time remaining.
There was just time for Dagenham to kick off and with one second remaining, Brundle tried to score direct from the kick off but sent his shot over the bar.
It was a dramatic end, and the Stags were through.
The draw for round 3 is on Monday night at 7pm.
The next game for the Stags is on Wednesday night at high-flying Cambridge United. Cambridge will have 2,000 fans at the game (and as a result, the kick-off has been moved to 7.45, so join us on iFollow Stags from 7.35pm). Having fans at the game will give Cambridge something of a home advantage that no side has had in any Stags game this season, but the bigger picture is that it is great to start getting fans back to games.

Nicky Maynard's stoppage-time winner in extra-time saw Mansfield avoid an FA Cup upset against National League side Dagenham & Redbridge.

Mansfield have only won one of their 14 matches in League Two this season but Maynard's desperately late winner was succour for manager Nigel Clough.

Jordan Bowery did well to find space on the left and his cross fell invitingly for Maynard to end Dagenham's bid to reach the third round for the first time in five seasons.

The Stags were forced to come from behind after Paul McCallum gave the visitors a first-half lead at Field Mill.

Myles Weston drove into the Mansfield half and slid a ball behind the defence for McCallum to run on to and finish superbly with a right-foot shot into the far corner from a tight angle.

But the home side soon levelled as Bowery found Harry Charlsey, who calmly side-footed home the equaliser.

Jamie Reid should have won the tie for Mansfield in normal time but he struck a powerful effort straight at Dagenham goalkeeper Elliot Justham, while Luke Croll headed over from point-blank range for the visitors to ensure another 30 minutes.

Dagenham had further chances in extra-time but Ryan Sweeney made a vital block to deny McCallum.

Clough sent on substitute keeper Aiden Stone in the 120th minute as penalties loomed before Maynard struck to send the Stags through.

Nicky Maynard scores deep in extra-time stoppage time to send Mansfield Town into FA Cup third round after win over Dagenham and Redbridge
chad.co.uk, Sunday 29th November 2020

Sub Nicky Maynard was the hero after scoring two minutes into extra-time stoppage time to book Mansfield’s place in the FA Cup third round.

Stags fell behind in the 19th minute against the battling National League side.

It sparked a brilliant response which saw Harry Charsley draw the hosts level six minutes later.

Mansfield then dominated as the Londoners’ goal led a charmed life thanks to a mixture of fine goalkeeping and wasteful finishing.

But, with everyone bracing themselves for penalties, Maynard popped up in the 122 minute to finally break the non-league side’s spirited resistance.

It came just seven minutes after the marksman had entered the field.

Mansfield will now be hoping for a plum third round draw and a bit of Nigel Clough cup magic.

Mansfield started on the front foot with Andy Cook firing just wide on four minutes as Mansfield started well.

But they fell behind when Paul McCallum fired home from a tight angle to give the Londoners a 19th minute lead.

Cook had a header well saved a minute later by Elliot Justham, before Jordan Bowery blazed over after a goal-mouth scramble.

Cook headed over on 23 minutes as Mansfield continued to pile on the pressure.

And it paid off when Charsley finished well two minutes later after Bowery picked him out.

Ollie Clarke was denied by another great save on 32 minutes after trying his luck from the edge of the box.

But he was wayward with a long range effort eight minutes into the second half.

Cook headed over on 61 minutes as he continued to cause all sorts of bother in the air.

Clarke struck the outside of the post with a deflected shot on 68 minutes.

Justham pulled off a blinding save to deny Jamie Reid with eight minutes to go as the visitors continued to stand firm.

Luke Croll headed just over in stoppage time as the tie went into extra-time.

Reid headed wide from Clarke’s cross on 94 minutes, before Clarke had a deflected shot ruled out for offside.

WIll Wright fired a free-kick straight at the Mansfield wall on 113 minutes as penalties loomed.

But Mansfield finally found the way through when Maynard hit the most dramatic of winners.
