Boss: Stags must do better in final third
mansfieldtown.net, Tuesday 24th November 2020

Boss Nigel Clough has challenged his side to be more clinical in the final third, following this evening’s 1-0 defeat to Harrogate Town.

The Stags found themselves in good areas throughout the contest, but saw their deliveries into the penalty area dealt with more often than not by the visitors.

The manager says the amber and blue must make more of their opportunities to create goalscoring chances.

“I think generally we could’ve had a point from the game. If we’d have got a goal, we might have gone and got the second,” he told iFollow Stags.

“But the biggest disappointment is not hitting the target tonight - I think we registered one shot on target tonight from quite a bit of play.

“We had more than enough situations tonight to create chances and get goals, and we failed to do that.

“Generally speaking, we dealt with what they had to throw at us. We defended well enough, but it was a poor goal to concede. Stephen [McLaughlin] loses a tussle and we fail to stop the cross.

“The biggest disappointment was in and around their penalty area. We have to do better and put better quality balls in.

“That’s one of the reasons why we are where we are. There were bags of effort, a lot of scrapping, tackling, heading, but when we get in that final third, we have to do more.”

The boss has urged his side to take more risks, especially from crossing positions.

“I thought we showed conviction and got bodies forward. We got Cooky [Andy Cook] on at the end, so we’ve got Cook, we’ve got [Jordan] Bowery and [Jamie] Reid on. So there was enough out there.

“We’ve just got to put better quality balls into the penalty area and do it more often.

“In the positions that we were in, don’t turn the opportunity down to cross the ball. Let’s put the ball into the box and see if something drops.

“We didn’t test them enough. There was some good play to get in and around the penalty area, but not enough from there.”

Following tonight’s defeat, attention now turns to Sunday’s Emirates FA Cup game against Dagenham & Redbridge. Nigel Clough added: “We’ll now get ready for Sunday as we want to get through in the FA Cup, to the third round.

“We have two big league games after that against Cambridge and Crawley, but we want to try and win on Sunday.

“There are a couple of lads carrying knocks, so we’ll put the strongest team out that we can, but we certainly won’t risk anybody.”

What Nigel Clough had to say about Harrogate Town's victory over his Mansfield Town team
harrogateadvertiser.co.uk, By Rhys Howell, Tuesday 24th November 2020

Mansfield boss Nigel Clough feels that his side did enough to warrant a point from Tuesday's League Two clash with Harrogate Town.

Calvin Miller's close-range finish from Jack Muldoon's 27th-minute cross earned the visitors a 1-0 victory at Field Mill and ended a run of six league matches without a win.

But, Stags manager Clough believes that on another night his players could have ended up with a share of the spoils and even went as far as to speculate that they might have gone on to take all three had an equaliser materialised.

"I think we could have had a point from the game and if we'd got one [goal], you never know from there, we might have gone on and got a second one," he said.

"But, the biggest disappointment is not hitting the target tonight. I think we registered one shot on target tonight from quite a bit of play. We had more than enough situations tonight to create chances and get goals, and we failed to do that. We didn't test them enough, we didn't test the goalkeeper.

"I thought that generally speaking, our two centre-halves dealt with what they threw at us very well, the long throw-ins, the set-plays. Marek [Stech] has only had the one shot [to save], so we defended well enough.

"It was a poor goal we conceded. Stephen [McLaughlin] loses a tussle and then we don't stop the cross.

"It's good to see the huge disappointment in the dressing room from the players, they know that we did enough and that on another night we could have had a point.

"Nothing dropped for us in the penalty area. They did get some good blocks in, but you just want a little ricochet to drop to somebody and it didn't quite happen."

Simon Weaver 'proud' of players after bounce back win
harrogateadvertiser.co.uk, By Rhys Howell, Tuesday 24th November 2020

Calvin Miller’s close-range finish from Jack Muldoon’s 27th-minute cross proved sufficient to settle what was a fairly scrappy affair on Tuesday evening.

Mark Beck squandered the Sulphurites’ only clear opportunity to extend their lead when he headed over from just a couple of yards out, though a superb defensive performance ensured that only the one goal was required.

Mansfield’s best chance to draw level came and went on 65 minutes as Nicky Maynard nodded wide, though the Stags struggled to really open up their visitors.

“This was a great bounce-back by the players,” said manager Simon Weaver, whose side were comprehensively beaten at Leyton Orient on Saturday.

”To a man, they stood up to the task. It didn’t have to be pretty, it was about the result and getting points on the board.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the players, this was a proper performance of passion. We just concentrated on nailing the basics, we had a good balance and sometimes it’s just about grabbing a win.

"It's a great victory, it feels as good as any."

Victory lifts Harrogate two places to 12th in the League Two standings.

Harrogate Town boss Simon Weaver hailed every one of his players following their battling 1-0 win at Mansfield.

Calvin Miller’s close-range finish from Jack Muldoon’s 27th-minute cross was enough to give the Yorkshireman the victory.

It left Weaver proud of how his players bounced back from their weekend defeat at Leyton Orient.

”To a man, they stood up to the task. It didn’t have to be pretty, it was about the result and getting points on the board,” he said.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the players, this was a proper performance of passion.

“We just concentrated on nailing the basics, we had a good balance and sometimes it’s just about grabbing a win.

"It's a great victory, it feels as good as any win.

“We have had an indifferent run. Everyone put in terrific effort and the team spirit was there, we deserved the three points.

“We made it very hard for them. We wanted a scruffy win to get points on the board and to build the confidence up again.

“It was very important to get the win. We have been hurting a bit and we wanted the feeling of getting back on the bus with a win.”

Warren Burrell hails Harrogate Town's win at Mansfield Town as one of their best since promotion
harrogateadvertiser.co.uk, By Rhys Howell, Tuesday 24th November 2020

Harrogate Town may not have produced a scintillating footballing display at Mansfield, but Warren Burrell is still classing Tuesday's victory as one of their best since promotion to the EFL.

Winless in League Two in their previous six outings, the Sulphurites were gritty and determined throughout and ultimately left Field Mill with all three points courtesy of Calvin Miller's first-half goal.

And, Burrell feels that Town were good value for a success over in-form opponents who came into the fixture unbeaten in six and having won three of their last four.

"Obviously we were desperate for three points. We came with a game-plan and executed the game-plan well. We were solid throughout, energy was good throughout and we've got the win we've been crying out for the last few weeks," he said.

https://www.harrogateadvertiser.co.uk/sport/football/warren-burrell-hails-harrogate-towns-win-mansfield-town-one-their-best-promotion-3047059

"We just went back to basics. Back to 4-4-2, high energy - which we base our game on - and winning first and second balls, and we did that throughout the 90 minutes, which is why we got the win.

"Some of our performances have been good and we've come away with no points, but some of them haven't been good enough at all, so it was just about getting points on the board here and I think we thoroughly deserved them.

"We've played better football in other games but this one is up there with our best wins of the season."

Versatile Burrell has spent this season playing at either left-back or right-back, but was deployed in the centre of the Town defence against the Stags following a decent showing from the substitutes' bench at Leyton Orient on Saturday.

Back in one of his favoured positions, the 30-year-old delivered arguably his finest performance of 2020/21 and admitted that he enjoyed his night's work.

"I enjoy playing centre-half," he added.

"Obviously I've not played there in a while, but I came on there on Saturday and played there again tonight and I know what I need to do in that position and feel that I did it well.

"When you're playing centre-half you've just got to defend your goal, that's your job really, so if you can get the blocks in that's good."
