Boss commends Stags’ spirit in away draw
mansfieldtown.net, Tuesday 20th October 2020

Manager Graham Coughlan says that the ‘character’ and ‘spirit’ shown by his charges against Morecambe this evening is what he wants to see from the Stags on a more regular basis.

After going behind early in the game, midfielder Harry Charsley’s first goal in amber and blue saw Mansfield earn a point on the road.

The boss says that his side ‘dug deep and responded’ to going behind in the game.

“I thought we played well and I hoped we could’ve maybe won it,” he told iFollow Stags. “I asked the lads after Saturday for character and spirit. I asked them to fight and battle.

“I think they responded and did what I asked of them tonight. We did a lot of work on Sunday and Monday.

“I think the lads rolled their sleeves up, dug deep and responded. We asked a centre-half to play right-back and a right-back to play left-back.

“After two minutes of the game I thought ‘here we go,’ but the lads moved the ball very well and I thought it was a really good game of football.

“It was a well-fought and hard-earned point. But having to come behind has frustrated me because I thought it [Morecambe goal] was a simple goal. We gave us a mountain to climb.

“It was a soft goal to give away and that was probably the only blot on the lads’ copybook this evening.

“My goalie [Marek Stech] pulled off a magnificent save and I hope people will look and see the quality we want and inherited, and that’s the quality of the man.

“He had a bad time on Saturday and that was character for me to go back in between the sticks tonight.

“To put him back in was a brave decision and a big call and he went back in and did what I believe he can do.”

The boss has called for ‘consistency’ from his players, who have shown ‘bits of quality’ this term.

“They are good players who are suffering a little bit, but they’ve shown the bits of quality they have.

“I think if we can get our front four firing and contributing I think we’ll be okay.

“If I add Ollie Clarke and George Lapslie to tonight’s squad I think that would be enough [to win the game].

“The leaders in the group need to step up to the plate. If we give that sort of character on a more regular basis, you just don’t know where we’ll go.

“I’ve been a little beat up over the last couple of weeks as I just want consistency from them. I want that fight, that spirit and they’ll win more games than they’ll lose.

“We’re just looking for one ball or decision to go our way, and it might just lift this dressing room.”

There was also an update on defender Mal Benning, who was absent from today’s squad.

“We were on the bus this morning and there were one or two concerns with Mal’s well-being. The doctor got in contact and advised that it was best and safe to leave Mal behind.

“So we’ve left him behind and he’s in capable hands. He’s being looked after by the doctor.”

Coughlan told iFollow Stags:

"We played 4-3-3 tonight. We were trying to get the two wingers high. You see Gordon coming in at the back stick, McLaughlin coming in at the back stick.

"Ty (Sinclair) came on. Ty's got legs. I thought he looked dangerous down the side there, he's got good quality.

"And whether it's from near or whether it's from far, I'll look forward to seeing his development.

"And I must mention Kell Gordon, it's probably his first full game in maybe 18 months and to play 90 minutes shows heart and desire."

Morecambe manager takes the positives from Mansfield Town draw
lancasterguardian.co.uk, By Gavin Browne, Tuesday 20th October 2020

Morecambe boss Derek Adams wasn’t too downbeat after watching his side draw 1-1 with Mansfield Town on Tuesday night.

Having lost 4-0 at Crawley Town last time out, the Shrimps had the ideal start with Adam Phillips giving them a third minute lead at the Mazuma Stadium.

However, Harry Charsley flicked home an equaliser for Mansfield, who had started the night second from bottom in League Two.

“From a football point of view it was a very good game," Adams said afterwards.

“Mansfield are a good side. I watched them on Saturday against Bradford and I thought they did very well. From our point of view, we were at it tonight.

“I thought it was a very good game. I think we started the game very well.

“We got into good areas and we got a quick goal; a ball up the side, John O’Sullivan flicks it on for Cole Stockton, who puts a lovely ball into the box for Adam Phillips to make a late run and score.

“I think we kept on going. Unfortunately for us, Mansfield got a goal back not long after that.

“It was a game that went to and fro. I thought the first half was very good, it was even in the second half.

“We were the better side. We created a lot of good openings, especially down their left-hand side, and didn’t find the final pass.

“Their player (Stephen McLaughlin) should have been sent off for a karate kick on John O’Sullivan and we should have had a penalty against Cole Stockton.

“That’s two games in a row that the decisions haven’t gone with us so we’re very hopeful the next ones do.”

Both sides had chances to add to their tally with Stockton putting one cross just too far ahead of Aaron Wildig before seeing a second-half header brilliantly saved by Mansfield keeper Marek Stech.

Phillips also had a chance to score a second on the night, sending a first-time effort narrowly over the bar.

At the other end, Mansfield defender Farrend Rawson saw a late header ruled out for a push.

Adams said: “He (Phillips) picks up good areas and he probably could have got a few tonight.

“In the second half, he put one over the bar when he probably just had to hit the target and it was in.

“Their goalkeeper made an outstanding save from Cole Stockton, so from that point of view, I think it was a good spectacle for League Two; two good teams going at each other.”

Morecambe defender missed Mansfield Town match through isolation
lancasterguardian.co.uk, By Gavin Browne, Tuesday 20th October 2020

Morecambe boss Derek Adams revealed that defender Harry Davis is self-isolating after he missed Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with Mansfield Town.

Davis was one of three changes from the side that lost at Crawley Town with Alex Kenyon (hamstring) and Carlos Mendes-Gomes (ankle) both out injured.

The centre-half is now awaiting confirmation of how long any absence will be.

Adams explained: “Harry has had to go into isolation, he’s come into contact with another person who has tested positive for the virus.

“He has to get the test, then we have to see if it’s 14 days or 10 days after that.”

The injury news continued for the Shrimps with Ryan Cooney and Liam Gibson both coming off with knocks during the second half at the Mazuma Stadium.

From a position of having a fully-fit squad a week ago, Adams potentially has to juggle his options ahead of Saturday’s home game with Forest Green Rovers.

“Ryan has gone over his ankle so he will be out and Liam will be out for Saturday as well,” Adams admitted.

“We’ve lost a few players, three today and two on Saturday, so that’s disappointing.

“It’s really unfortunate, I just think that’s what happens when the games come thick and fast; they are playing at a high tempo and we’ve suffered two impact injuries and two strains.

“Liam Gibson, you can understand because he hasn’t had a pre-season and Alex Kenyon just overstretched.”

There could have been a further casualty with John O’Sullivan the victim of a poor challenge from Mansfield’s Stephen McLaughlin.

His raised foot made contact with O’Sullivan’s upper body and he was lucky to only be cautioned by referee Marc Edwards.

“He didn’t intend it but it was reckless and it endangered an opponent, so that means it’s a sending off,” Adams said.

“It’s high. I’ve seen the pictures so I can comment on it and I thought it was a sending off.”
